The Belgian midfielder has often been deployed as a substitute by Jose Mourinho, and came off the bench to score United’s second against Hull in the EFL Cup semi-final first leg on Tuesday.
Despite a lack of starting opportunities, United have now triggered a clause in his contract to keep the player at the club until the summer of 2018.
As the cluib explained in a statement on their website:
When signing from Everton on the final day of the summer transfer window in 2013, the Belgian agreed a four-year deal with the option of a further year. That has now been taken up, tying him to Old Trafford until at least the summer of 2018.
Fellaini’s emotional celebration against Hull saw him head for manager Mourinho on the sidelines, with the United boss recently dedicating a victory to the Belgian after he faced criticism for a previous performance.
