Down at the other end, Stoke go close once more. Shaqiri finds a way past Moreno and drills in a low ball across the face but it just evades Crouch who would have been left with a simple tap-in had he been better positioned.

Liverpool break. Wijnaldum switches the play to Salah and it's really unselfish play from the Egyptian as he slips the ball through to Alexander-Arnold, but the youngster is denied by Butland. He couldn't quite sort his feet out.

Bauer skips past Gomez before lifting a cross to Diouf at the back post but the Stoke forward heads straight at the side netting from an acute angle.

Karius gifts possession to Crouch who has a shooting opportunity, but the former Liverpool striker runs into trouble and Liverpool survive.

Great vision by Moreno as he tries to bend the ball towards Salah, but it's slightly too heavy. Salah retrieves it, but the Stoke defence are well placed to block the Egyptian's shot.

The Potters need a miracle, let's be honest. But Lambert will have be encouraged by the start his side have made.

Liverpool haven't lost at Anfield in over a year, while Stoke have the worst away record across all four divisions with just one win on their travels all season.

Perhaps Salah is human after all?! Henderson slips a through-pass to the Egyptian behind the Stoke defence - Pieters steps up at exactly the wrong time - he's through on goal and got to score... but chips the ball over Butland and wide of the target.

A beautifully-weighted pass from Firmino finds Alexander-Arnold inside the box and he stumbles to the ground after slight contact from Pieters. No penalty, says the referee.
