GOAL! Liverpool 1-0 Manchester United (Van Dijk) It's been a good start for United ... until it hasn't. The corner is a good one, into the heart of the box, and somehow Williams finds himself tracking Van Dijk in a total mismatch, while Maguire, whose man he probably was, is too far away to prevent him punishing a header past De Gea. Liverpool are good at set-pieces United are not.

United fail to clear properly and Oxlade-Chamberlain collects, trying to take the ball around the outside of Williams, who blocks the cross behind.

Robertson darts a ball around the corner for Wijnaldum, but Lindelof is wise to the ruse and boots into touch.

Martial pulls left and lays back for Pereira; he has a split-second to shoot but opts to keep possession and eventually Martial wanders offside.

United look relatively composed on the ball, and a clever spin from Pereira almost puts James away, but Robertson does really well to slide in and intercept.

Alexander-Arnold flips in the free-kick and Mane gets away from Lindelof - he is useless in the air - and heads wide.

"Where's yer famous atmosphere?" wonders the away end, as Matic flicks a foot in search of a loose ball, tickling Wijnaldum's coupon in the process; he's booked, which is harsh but fair.

The corner goes short, Alexander-Arnold to Robertson, whose cross is headed clear.

United have started pretty well here, but the problem for them is what happens when Liverpool score, because they're prone to losing their way. In the meantime, Liverpool spread play wide to Mane, who lays back for Robertson, and his cross is blocked behind.

Excellent from Matic, who's been better of late, beating a man in the middle and sending a pass out to James between Van Dijk and Robertson; he crosses towards Martial, but Van Dijk gets back to cut out.

He goes short to Pereira, who swings over a cross that's actually not bad, but Williams can't collect and Liverpool try to counter ... but Mane's pass to Firmino is loose.

Wijnaldum trips Fred and United have a free-kick, 35 yards out and right of centre; Fred will swing it over the bar...

Every time Liverpool get the ball and look likely to attack, Williams dashes back into defence.

De Gea waits till the last second to pick up a hoof from Henderson, trying to take the sting out of things.

It's a back four for United, with Williams ahead of Shaw.

Immediately, Maguire lumps one long to little avail; of course he does.

United get us underway, attacking the Kop.

Harry Maguire leads United out for the first time as full-time captain. I'd guess that was always Solskjaer's plan and was one of the reasons he bought him. The truth is that Maguire hasn't really shown the kind of leadership his PR says is part of his package; United have conceded far too many leads for a team with a supposed warrior-organiser at centre-back.
