22'
A long ball from the back almost releases Joelinton, who is marginally offside.
19'
Shelvey gets the ball in the centre-circle, completely unmarked. He looks up to see Adrian off his line, and tries to lob him from the Newcastle half. His connection is poor, and it dribbles out miserably for a goal kick.
17'
Newcastle clear the corner. It eventually finds Alexander-Arnold, who whips in a cross that Mane guides well wide of the goal from a long way out.
16'
Origi wins the first corner of the day for Liverpool.
13'
Newcastle are compact and organised, with Liverpool dominating possession. A huge chorus of Blaydon Races goes up from the jubilant Newcastle fans.
11'
Oxlade-Chamberlain tries to up the tempo for Liverpool. He piles through the middle and lets a right-footer fly from thirty yards, which whistles a few yards past Dubravka's post.
10'
It's safe to say that Anfield is utterly stunned by that. A long ball to Willems isolates him on the left with Alexander-Arnold again, but he's offside.

GOAL! Liverpool 0 Newcastle United 1 (Willems 7)
Well well, look at this, Newcastle are in front! A quick break by Newcastle sees Atsu find the wingback Willems one on one with Alexander-Arnold on the left of the Liverpool box. He drags the ball inside with his studs to open up the angle, and thunders an unstoppable strike past Adrian!
5'
A brief sojourn forward for Newcastle, as van Dijk cuts out a through pass to Almiron and Liverpool coolly play their way out of danger via Adrian.
4'
Origi has gone down here, clipped in a 50:50 with Almiron. He's soon back to his feet though.
2'
Liverpool have settled into an early bout of possession here, at about 60% of the thrust that their jet-heeled team is capable of. Newcastle are happy to leave them to it so far.

Peep peep, we're up and running!

It's a glorious sunny day in Liverpool, the conditions are perfect. The teams are just letting the Premier League's dramatic intro music play out while going through the obligatory pre-match handshakes. You'll Never Walk Alone fires up on the tannoy, and it's nearly time to go...
12:25
The teams are in the tunnel and ready to go, with the captains Virgil van Dijk and Jamaal Lascelles set to lead the teams out. Your referee for today’s fun and mischief will be Andre Marriner.
12:20
It’s impossible to talk about a game between Liverpool and Newcastle at Anfield without drifting off into reverie about one such fixture from the past in particular. You all know it – that balmy spring evening of 3 April 1996, where Roy Evans’ soon-to-be-christened Spice Boys and Kevin Keegan’s doomed romantics traded haymakers in the forlorn pursuit of the Premier League title. They both won a different prize instead; those teams contested what is surely the greatest Premier League game of all time, which Stan Collymore closed in to steal 4-3 for Liverpool in injury time. It was the springboard for the Premier League as we know it today. You can draw a line back from all the modern hype and hoopla about the club game in England to that one extraordinary evening at Anfield 23 years ago.
12:15
When Rafael Benitez left Newcastle United at the end of June there were immediate fears that the team might go into a tailspin this season. Replacement manager Steve Bruce lost his opening two Premier League games but has since bounced back admirably by winning away at Tottenham and then salvaging a home draw with Watford. Keeping this mini-revival going will be tough, however; Newcastle haven’t won at Anfield since April 1994.
12:10
Liverpool have flown out of the gate in the Premier League this season, winning all four matches to sit on top of the table in its early stages. When tied to their run-in at the end of last season that saw them go agonisingly close to winning the title, Jurgen Klopp’s team are on a record run. Their 3-0 victory over Burnley at Turf Moor just before the international break was their thirteenth Premier League victory in a row.
12:06
Just one change for Newcastle from their home draw with Watford prior to the international break. Promising midfielder Sean Longstaff hurt his ankle in training and will not be involved today. His place is taken by Shelvey.
12:00
Still no Alisson for Liverpool, so Adrian carries on in nets for the home side. There are just two changes from the team that beat Burnley. After the recent spate of internationals, Henderson and Firmino are rested/rotated/dropped to the bench this lunchtime, replaced in the starting eleven by Oxlade-Chamberlain and Origi.
