The history of this fixture goes all the way back to 1 December 1888 and the first season of league football anywhere in the world, when West Brom went to Anfield and beat Everton 4-1. Overall, Everton have won 69 to West Brom’s 59 in all competitions between the two, with 39 draws.

For West Brom the early signs on the opening weekend were that this season could be a long struggle. They were eviscerated at home by Leicester City, a 3-0 defeat in which they created few chances. It’s a tough run of opening fixtures for the newly promoted side, with Chelsea due to visit the Hawthorns next weekend, but some good early results could give manager Slaven Bilic the best possible chance of staying up this season.
