GOAL! MANCHESTER UNITED 0 BRIGHTON 1 (GROSS 30)
They've deserved this. Trossard slides a glorious pass through to Welbeck, beating United's offside trap. Welbeck squares it across goal, Lallana and Shaw both miss it and Gross arrives at the back post to tuck it home.

BRIGHTON CORNER
Gross whips it to the penalty spot and Dunk wins it, but heads high over the bar.

HEFTY CHALLENGE
McTominay has absolutely clattered Caicedo after overrunning the ball and following through on a tackle. In comms, Carragher thinks McTominay is a touch lucky it's no more than a yellow. The follow through finishes on the top of the foot, and I daresay Carra is correct.

ANOTHER DANGEROUS CROSS
Caicedo again dinks one to Welbeck in the area, and Martinez gets a good block header in. United then break immediately, with Fernandes putting Eriksen through in the left of the area, but he can only put his cross straight into the hands of Sanchez.
20'
GOOD CROSS
Caicedo finds Welbeck with a good cross to the back post, but Welbeck can barely get a glance on it. As it transpires, he was offside anyhow.
19'
POOR CROSS
Fernandes gets a free look at a cross from the right edge of the area, but puts it straight behind.
17'
PRESSURE
Gross forces De Gea to put a pass straight out for a throw-in. They're growing into this, Brighton, and they know they're up against a shaky back four.
15'
CLOSE!
A slide-ruled ball releases Welbeck into the area on the right, but he loses his footing just as he looks to square it to Trossard and Martinez gets back to win the ball.
12'
DOMINATION
Statisticians tell us that United have had 80% of the ball so far. They've created the best chance too, but also given Brighton two dangerous situations on a platter.
9'
SLOPPY
United cough a free ball to Trossard in the area again, this time it's Fred that passes it out carelessly. Fred recovers though to slide in and block the cross, but that's another lackadaisical piece of play from the home side.
7'
BIG CHANCE!
Sancho slides a pass through to McTominay in the right of the area. McTominay's cross deflects to Fernandes on the penalty spot, who has time and an open look but blazes his immediate shot high over the bar.

SETTLING DOWN
After that wobble United settle into possession. There's lots of movement and interchanging of positions so far, but also some loose play that suggests it's a style under development.

PEEP!
We're off, and it's a shot straight away for Brighton. A dawdling Dalot gives the ball away cheaply and it breaks to Trossard in the area, who lashes a volley into the side netting. De Gea had it covered, but that's a shaky start for United.

THE KNEE
Both sets of players take it; there is no room for racism.

IN THE TUNNEL
This Is The One is blaring around Old Trafford, and both teams are in the tunnel about to come out onto the pitch. Your referee today is Paul Tierney.

CONFIDENCE
Like a lot of teams pitching up to Old Trafford in the last nine years, Brighton are in a pretty chipper mood.

UNDERSTUDY ON THE STAGE
When he signed, it was widely assumed that Christian Eriksen would be a back-up to Bruno Fernandes. Interestingly, in his pre-match interview just now Ten Hag intimated that Eriksen might spend most of his time today deployed as the central forward, with Rashford off to the left and Fernandes in behind.

WHEN LAST THEY MET
Manchester United fans avert your eyes, Brighton fans take a sip of coffee and pay attention. Here's the last meeting between the two, a four-goal hosing that was a respective high and low point for the two clubs in 2021-22.

FOLLOW THAT
For results in relation to resources, Graham Potter had more than a fair shout to be the manager of the season in 2021-22. Brighton's ninth-placed finish was a vaulting improvement on the previous season, but the double-edged sword of that success led to the big London clubs swooping in for Bissouma and Cucurella. Acheiving even parity with last season will be hard enough, but they are experts in drawing level - last season they drew 15 of their Premier League matches.

MAY YOU LIVE IN INTERESTING TIMES
This Ronaldo saga looks set to run and run, and his placement on the bench today might suggest that it's a decision not based solely on fitness. If Ten Hag is going to have a decent shot at reshaping United from the ground up, then Ronaldo's seemingly imminent departure is laced with symbolism in that regard. If/when Ronaldo does leave, and if/when a new striker and midfielder come in, then it starts to look more look a fresh start than a compromise.
