YELLOW!
More direct running from Jota causes panic in the Chelsea defence. They scramble it away to the edge, where a late lung from Fernandez flattens Jones, and a card ensues.

GOOD SAVE!
Jones gets an angle for a shot from the edge, and fizzes it low to the bottom right corner. Petrovic gets a good, strong hand on it, and pushes the ball away from danger.
30'
COMFORTABLE
It's arms length stuff from Liverpool now, as they hold Chelsea near the halfway line and look to pounce in transition.
27'
GOOD DEFENDING
A long pass briefly threatens to release Madueke in behind Van Dijk, only for the latter to recover and get his body across the ball to allow Alisson to gather.
25'
GREAT FINISH
That was superb from Jota. He saw the gap, narrow as it was, and wouldn't allow anything or anyone to stop him going through it.

GOAL! LIVERPOOL 1 (JOTA 23) CHELSEA 0
It's been coming. Chilwell gives it away again, and Bradley piles into the Chelsea half on the right. He feeds the ball to Jota, central and 25 yards out. Jota drives at the gap between Thiago Silva and Badiashile, and bulldozes through it before tucking a low shot past Petrovic.

PINNED BACK
Nunez hangs up a dangerous cross to the back post; it breaks to Mac Allister on the edge, whose half-volley is deflected wide for a corner. It feels like it's coming here for Liverpool, as Chelsea cannot make any of their morsals of possession stick.
18'
EXCELLENT SAVE!
A long ball from Konate over the top splits Thiago Silva and Disasi, and Nunez is free on the left of the area. He hits the bouncing ball across Petrovic to the far post, but Petrovic throws out a hand to turn it onto the post and behind.
17'
BOSSING IT
Chelsea are right under it here, the game is being played almost exclusively in their half. Diaz versus Disasi is shaping up to be a key battle; Liverpool keep working it left, but Diaz isn't serving up anything in the way of chances so far.
14'
NUNEZ SHOOTS AGAIN
Chilwell gives the ball away dangerously in his own final third. Nunez is the recipient, and he jinks to his right and booms at goal from 25 yards out. It flies wide, by a couple of yards, but that's a warning to Chelsea who have been a bit sloppy in their own half so far.
12'
YELLOW CARD
Caicedo hares after Diaz to try and win the ball for Chelsea. It's a battle he eventually wins, but he's too keen; a free kick is given and for expressing his unhappiness, Diaz gets booked.

TIPPED OVER!
Mac Allister finds Nunez with a slick through ball near the D. Nunez lets fly, a booming effort that Petrovic and a wee bit of the bar put behind for a corner.
6'
DRAMA!
At one end a lovely ball from Bradley finds Nunez, who tries to lob Petrovic from the edge of the area but the keep gathers comfortably. Chelsea then break, with Gallagher surging into the area from a square ball by Chilwell. Gallagher goes over under a challenge from Van Dijk...is that a penalty? It's checked and no dice, but it looked like Van Dijk caught him there.
5'
GOOD TACKLE
Jota briefly threatens to get between the lines in the final third, only to be dumped over by a man plus ball tackle from Badiashile.
2'
OVERHIT
Chelsea are pinned back early, but eventually break out. Palmer tries to find Sterling with a lofted through ball down the inside left channel, but he's put slightly too much on it and Alisson is out to gather.

TEAMS IN THE TUNNEL
I hear the clackety-clack of boots, and we're set to go here. The referee tonight is Paul Tierney.
20:08
SPEAKING OF COLE
How about that Cole Palmer, seemingly operating as a false nine here tonight? He's bagged 13 goals in 27 appearances, in all competitions and for all clubs in 2023-24. It's a chilling warning for the rest of the league about Manchester City's squad, if they can afford to let someone this good leave after the start of the season. It's been a great move for Palmer though, who is progressing at some rate and looks likely to go to the Euros if he keeps this up.

PUNDIT CHAT
The very dapper Joe Cole has his say on Liverpool's future.

COUPON BUSTER
The last seven games between both of these teams have finished level at the final whistle; in two of them, Liverpool went on to win the EFL Cup and the FA Cup on penalties. There have been a mighty eight goals in those fixtures, but surely we'll get a bit of net bothering tonight.
