He leaps to control a switch, on the blindside of Tanner and coming across him suddenly in possession. He is a beautiful footballer. He can't find a man with his cross, but if he keeps improving, City will get a lot better wirth him.

Then runs into Scott, face and neck into shoulder. Ouch. He needs a minute, but he's fine.

Allowing Bell to run in behind and take a pass from Scott. He scoots infield, from left to centre, looking to invent a shooting lane, and Lewis gets back at him well enough to force a skied shot.

Man City went out of the Carabao Cup to Nathan Jones' Southampton. That won't have done Bristol city any favours - City have been sharp from the off.

Looking for gaps, stretching the pitch. It's so easy for them, even though Bristol City are trying to make it hard, and in the end, De Bruyne loses patience, thrashing way over the bar.

"Come and be Rodri's understudy"? I guess it still means, in theory, a decent number of games, just not the big ones unless there's an injury, and almost definite medals and improvement. And more money. I guess it doesn't sound like a reach after all.

Good on them. As Pearson said pre-match, they're a young side, so they should have plenty of energy.

His side have sort of had a few opportunities. But they've not been able to craft good ones, whereas City have looked likely to score almost every time they've attacked.

De Bruyne drives into the box and has Mahrez free to his right. But he wallops a left-footed shot that's blocked, Foden lifts to the far post, and Mahrez slices his shot ... so it beats O'Leary, rearing up to be headed off the line by Kalas.

He plays a wall-pass off Alvarez, nothing more doing so City try something else, De Bruyne finding Ake who plays a gorgeous reverse pass with the outside of his left foot ... that's got just too much on it for Alvarez.

Thing is, it seems inconceivable that at some point, Man City don't score again - whether or not Bristol City equalise. Their passing is so crisp.

And he zooms down the left, veers inside across a defender, then screws a low shot that's straight at Ortega. This is a decent game.

But when Tanner's cross is cleared, City counter, Phillips, Mahrez and De Bruyne combining, before Kalas makes the tackle.

Who spins it out wide for Foden. He has a look, then picks a clever pass into the aforementioned Alvarez, now in the box ... and he misses his kick, ball hitting standing leg instead, about eight yards from goal. Whoops!

So accepts some treatment. He seems fine.

Scott feeding Bell, who skids towards the box, pokes inside for Wells ... who goes down. I think Bell was offside, but that wasn't a penalty.

And he takes a really good first touch, in front of the chasing Lewis, then goes down! That looks a lot like a penalty to me - Lewis doesn't get near the ball, and a generous interpretation says he did absolutely everything you can do without quite stepping over the line egregiously; a sensible one says penalty. The ref, though, prefers to let things run, though there was a hand in back, an arm a across, and a meeting of legs.
