This is the chance that Sterling should have scored.

This has been a decent opening 20 minutes from England, but Southgate will be a little worried that they haven't taken the lead against a Swiss side that can be difficult to put away.

That was harsh on Delph. The Manchester City midfielder-turned-full back slid in on Schar and won the ball, but the referee wasn't too keen on it and awarded Switzerland the foul.
19'
That chance for Sterling came from Alexander-Arnold's movement down the right side. This is a good opportunity for the youngster to show why he deserves to be first choice for club and country.

Dier gave away the ball in a bad area and this is what has been talked about a lot since the semi final defeat to Netherlands. England just don't have players to control the game through the centre.
16'
England have created the best two opportunities through Kane and Sterling. Switzerland are renowned for their organisation, but England are having joy cutting them open at the back.

Sterling should score! That was a golden opportunity for the England forward! Alli and Kane combined to set up Sterling for the shot six yards out from goal, but Sommer makes the low save.

There are a good number of England fans in Guimares for what is essentially a meaningless game. It feels like a lot of them expected to be in the final later this evening.

Shot at Pickford! That was very easy for Switzerland to play a ball right through the middle of England. Freuler gets the shot away on the bounce, but his effort is straight at Pickford.
11'
Alli tries to pressure Mbabu as the Swiss full back heads back towards his own goal, but the England attacker is a little too eager and gives away the freekick when he didn't really need to.

This isn't the match that England wanted to be playing today. However, they have started quite sharply so it would seem that they want to use this as an opportunity to make an impression.

Of course, while Switzerland might not have many superstars, they are a solid team and showed that last summer by making the knockout rounds of the World Cup. They aren't beaten often.

Delph and Dier are both decent players, but their selection in the centre of the England midfield demonstrates the problems Southgate faces in finding players who can control a game.

Switzerland have responded well to that early England opportunity. They have taken control of things in the centre of the pitch, but England look dangerous whenever they win it back.

The pre-match scene...

That would have been a magnificent way to start for England. Kane's finish would have been a beauty. He was unfortunate to see his effort come off the woodwork. England on top.

Off the crossbar! Almost an early opener for England! There have been questions over Kane's fitness of late, but he very nearly put England ahead there as he chipped Sommer from a through ball by Lingard!
