The 2023 Women's World Cup lost a co-host on Sunday, as New Zealand crashed out at the group stage. New Zealand required a win over Switzerland in Dunedin to advance to the knockouts, but they never got going and had to settle for a goalless draw. That result combined with Norway's hammering of the Philippines sent New Zealand packing. Switzerland advance as winners of Group A.

'It's one of my strengths'' - Ilestedt heads brace from corners as Sweden beat Italy 5-0

New Zealand crashed out of the 2023 Women’s World Cup following a limp 0-0 draw against Switzerland.
Consequenly, the Ferns become the first host nation in the history of the tournament to exit at the first round group stage.
With Norway crushing Philippines 6-0 in the other game in Group A to revive their hopes, New Zealand required a positive result to advance to the knockout stages.
In contrast, a draw would have been enough for Switzerland to make it out of the group.
With Norway taking control early in their match, New Zealand’s task was a simple one.
Urgency was required, but it never felt that way in Dunedin.
It took New Zealand 74 minutes to muster a shot on target, with Malia Steinmetz's effort easily fielded by Gaelle Thalmann.
The crowd urged New Zealand on in the final 15 minutes, but they were unable to find the goal that was required.
There were eight minutes of added time, New Zealand sent goalkeeper Victoria Esson forward on a couple of occasions, but the Swiss stood firm.
The point was enough Switzerland to top Group A, and they will meet the runners-up in from Group C in Auckland on August 5.
