Portugal look a supremely confident outfit who know exactly what they're doing; it's funny how that happens, because they didn't look especially like that in France, and then they won the thing. The same happened with France in the 1998 World Cup; they were much better after they won it than while winning it.

Behind Gulasci's goal, the home fans are bouncing away, and Joao Mario tosses in a cross which Kadar heads behind. this time the corner is cleared to Joao Mario, and Kadar slides in to block behind for another. Moutinho takes it short to Coentrao, takes the return, and whips into the box where Ronaldo stoops in front of his man and guides a fine effort just wide. His eminence is not impressed with his behaviour.

Ronaldo gets on the ball at inside-left and veers inside,surveying his passing options. Not really; he unleashes a zetz that Gulasci is relieved to poke over the top. Great effort; the corner comes to nowt.

Probably worth noting that both sides are playing 4-4-2, not often we get a derby of that ilk. And Portugal field Danilo in central midfield; now I get why Guardiola signed him. Yes, I know it's a different Danilo.

Oh, and Ronaldo has three games left in which to make the record his own.

Ronaldo has 14 goals in qualifying so far, the same number that Predrag Mijatovic managed for Yugoslavia prior to France 198. And whereas seven of Mijatovic's tally came in a play-off - against Hungary - Ronaldo hasn't required those extra games, and has notched at least once in each appaearance.

Last time out - so on Friday night - Portugal beat the Faroes 5-1 with old Ronaldo contributing a hat-trick; Hungary beat Latvia 3-1.

Let's be real: Hungary are not a good side. They recently lost to Andorra, and there's really nothing more to say about that. Portugal, on the other hand, were beaten in the first qualifier away in Switzerland, a game for which they had neither Ronaldo nor Joao Mario, and have won all six since. In theory, this will not be close.
