FIFA World Cup 2022 in Qatar LIVE: Portugal v Uruguay updates as Bruno Fernandes' opener has Portugal on the brink of the knockouts

Portugal held a minute silence during training as a mark of respect for the recent passing of Fernando Gomes. Gomes played 47 times for Portugal, appearing at Euro 1984 and World Cup 1986.

Rafael Leao was magnificent when he came on against Ghana, giving Portugal pace and dynamism going forward. His ability to take on defenders and his keen eye for goal saw him win Serie A MVP last season but once again he starts on Portugal's bench.

This meeting between Portugal and Uruguay comes four years after their clash at the 2018 FIFA World Cup Round of 16. Uruguay knocked Portugal out of the World Cup, winning 2-1 thanks to two great goals from Cavani.

Nuno Mendes is back in the starting XI for Portugal after missing the match vs Ghana through injury. Raphael Guerreiro didn't do much wrong in the last match but Mendes gives Portugal more energy and greater pace down the left.

Uruguay have opted to go with a back three for this match in order to play with two central strikers in Cavani and Nunez. In the previous match, a 0-0 draw with South Korea, they used a 4-3-3 with Suarez as the striker and Darwin on the left.

Uruguay come into this one on one point knowing that a win tonight will take them top of Group H on 4 points. They will be calling on the attacking threat of both Edinson Cavani and Darwin Nunez to help Uruguay get their first goal of the tournament.

Fernando Santos and Portugal know that a win tonight will see them qualify for the Round of 16. A reminder that the runner-up of Group H will have to face the Group G winner, who as it stands, is Brazil. Portugal will not only want to qualify, but to top the group to avoid the South American side.
