Sure enough, Webber sweeps to the fastest lap time of the day - 1:27.075 - almost half a second faster than the rest of the field. And he's staying on the pace for a second lap...
59'
And here's one of the men who could make it happen - Mark Webber out in the Red Bull.
60'
So a third of the way into the session, and the timesheets read as follows: Perez, Button, Hamilton, Kobayashi, Maldonado, Massa - but there's plenty of time for that to change.
61'
Button second-quickest - just 0.004 behind Perez, and quicker for the moment than his team-mate.
62'
No sign of the Red Bulls yet - only 11 racers have recorded a full lap.
63'
Button fourth quickest as Hamilton dives back into the pits.
64'
Maldonado has ventured out for the Williams - it's been a rough time for the constructor in recent weeks and though it's hard to know what Maldonado is testing at the moment, he's 4.5 seconds off the pace for the moment.
65'
The Mercedes are back out. Alonso does a straight line test on the final straight as the drivers sweep past.
66'
DRS - are you a fan of it? The jury is still very much out - is it making passing moves too easy or adding some spice to race days? An interesting test will be here in Spain, where there have only been an average of 3-4 passes for position in recent years...
67'
Worried faces in the Virgin camp as Timo Glock ambles pacelessly along the track. Is that a technical fault undermining the German's car?
68'
Hamilton's pace is picking up - he moves into second place with a 1:27.9. Meanwhile Fernando Alonso of Ferrari exits the pits - something he'll be doing for the Italian giants until 2016
69'
Here's a quick look at the track in Catalunya - expect the lap times to get a bit closer to Kimi Raikonnen's lap record of 1:21.670
70'
Perez is showing decent pace here - posting a 1:27.5. He'll hold the top spot for the time being with Kobayashi back into the pits.
71'
Hamilton posts the third-fastest time of the morning, some way behind the pace at the front.
72'
I speak too soon - Hamilton hits the track - but the first pictures show the Brit going off the track at turn 13. Looks like he'll be able to continue.
73'
No sign of the McLarens yet -
74'
And all the while Kobayashi, his team-mate, is tearing up the track and goes half a second quicker!

A 1:30.5 for Perez, just a shade under three seconds quicker than the Mercedes. With the teams making a tentative start to practice, it's going to be a while yet before these times and placings start to mean something.
76'
Perez has the track all to himself and he's making it count - 2.5 seconds ahead of the best time in sector one.
77'
Schumacher, Rosberg and Massa, the only three drivers to have posted lap times, have retreated to the pits too. But we do have a car on track - here's Sergio Perez in the Sauber.
78'
Jenson Button is happily conducting an interview in the pitlane, and looks like he's a mile away from stepping into the car. It's been a very quiet start in this session.
