Andreas Wellinger wins sensational Four Hills opener in Oberstdorf, Halvor Egner Granerud out in first round

The German delighted the strong home support with a staggering jump in the first round, propelling him to victory. He finished with a final score of 309.3 points, while Japan's Ryoyu Kobayashi came second and scored 306.3 points. Last year's winner Halvor Egner Granerud endured a torrid time and suffered the embarassment of a first-round exit with a measly score of 100.7 points.

Andreas Wellinger delighted a home crowd at the Four Hills tournament up and began with a win in Oberstdorf, as part of the FIS Ski Jumping World Cup.

The German dominated in the qualification round with a strong jump in front of a 16,300-strong crowd and matched his exploits in the final, finishing on a score of 309.3 points.

He pipped Japan's Ryoyu Kobayashi who jumped 134.5m in the first round followed by 129m to finish second on 306.3 points.

His efforts were not enough to make ground on Wellinger's brillaint 139.5m first-round jump, one of the best so far this season, which earned him 161.3 points.

Last year's Four Hills winner, Halvor Egner Granerud, was eliminated in the first round after scoring just 100.7 points in one of the big shocks of the day.

And Wellinger's jumping also denied Stefan Kraft, who settled for third on 298.9 points, more than 10 points behind his rival.

The Austrian still leads the overall World Cup leaderboard on 729 points as Wellinger remains in second on 547 points.
