Snowboarding auperstar Shaun White staked his claim for a third Olympic halfpipe title with an untouchable performance in his qualifying runs.
America's double Olympic champion and 13-time X Games gold medallist, 31, led after his first run with a 93.25 score before blowing away the rest of his rivals with an incredible 98.50 on his last run.
Scott James of Australia and Japan's Ayumu Hirano bettered White's first run with exceptional scores of 96.75 and 95.25 respectively but White was determined not to be denied the top spot.
He showed superior speed and height on his final run to post a score that was just one and-a-half points off a perfect one.
White is bidding for his third Olympic title after topping the podium on his debut as a 19 year-old in Turin before repeating his success at Vancouver in 2010.
