Top 5 shots, Day 1: Barty, Nadal and a magic dive

The build-up to the Australian Open was like no other. It was dominated by one man, Novak Djokovic - over a 10-day period the nine-time Australian Open winner had his visa cancelled, was detained at an immigration hotel, won an appeal to get his visa re-instated, trained at Melbourne Park, had his visa revoked again - this time by the immigration minister, Alex Hawke - launched another appeal that was rejected and he left the country. Mats Wilander has said that the judge who ruled on the final appeal may have changed the course of sporting history.
It is a story that will run and run, with reports emerging that the 34-year-old will now need a vaccine to compete at the French Open, and doubts persist over whether the world No. 1 will be able to compete at Wimbledon or the US Open either. Despite the overbearing nature of the Djokovic saga, this year’s tournament is decorated with narrative.
Former world No. 1 Andy Murray furnished his Australian Open further with a five-set success against Nikoloz Basilashvili in round one but lost to Taro Daniel in round two. Ashleigh Barty has made a smart start with wins against Lesia Tsurenko and Lucia Bronzetti but can she seal a first win at her home Grand Slam? And can Daniil Medvedev seal back-to-back Grand Slam wins to usher in a new era in the men’s game? He overcame a stern test on Thursday, beating Nick Kyrgios in four sets in round two.
What of Emma Raducanu – could she replicate her astonishing US Open success? The answer to that question was no, after she fell to Danka Kovinic in three sets at the second-round stage after a valiant fight. Can Alex Zverev back up his Olympic and Tour finals win with a maiden Grand Slam? How will defending champion Naomi Osaka fare? Will Rafael Nadal win a 21st Grand Slam?
Follow all of this live on Eurosport, the Eurosport App, Eurosport.co.uk and discovery+. As well as all of that action live, there will be more analysis once the match coverage has ended, with bonus shows from the Cube screened exclusively on discovery+ and the Eurosport App.

Are there fans at the Australian Open 2022?

Yes. But as the Omicron variant has forced the state government to cap crowds at 50%. The decision was taken the Thursday before the event so any already-purchased tickets will be honoured.
"Face masks will be mandatory for all patrons, except when eating or drinking, and the event will align with Victoria's statewide Covid-safe settings," the government said.
"This includes a density limit of one person per two square metres for all indoor hospitality. Ventilation will be improved in indoor areas of Melbourne Park, with HEPA filters to be installed in some spaces after a ventilation assessment is completed for the venue.”
Fans – just like players – will need to be double vaccinated.
