NADAL 5-3 FEDERER. The Swiss makes short work of a love hold as Nadal really struggles with the wind at that end. Indeed, all breaks of serve have come from where Nadal is attempting to serve out the set now...
NADAL 5-2 FEDERER. Nadal consolidates with real panache. He glides in to the net to follow up a dominant point with a crisp volley before concluding a hold to 30 with a sizzling crosscourt backhand winner after what was arguably the rally of the contest.

BREAK! - NADAL 3-2 FEDERER. The Swiss bites back! Some wonderful hands at the net get him to 15-30 but Nadal peppers the backhand and gets himself into a winning position. The King of Clay blows a forehand long and from there Federer ups the ante. The Swiss gets great angle off both wings and lures the errors out of Rafa to take the game.

BREAK! - NADAL 2-0 FEDERER. Nadal goes on the attack with a trademark forehand winner before a wild backhand from the Swiss tees up double break point. Federer saves both but is then passed by a super Rafa backhand before the No.3 seed dumps a timid strike into the net off that same wing. The 11-time champion has the early breakthrough, but the match could yet be unpredictable given this wind.
NADAL 1-0 FEDERER. That was an awkward opener for Nadal but he comes through it. Both players are clearly struggling with the wind and there are plenty of miscues. Federer finds a lovely angle for a backhand winner for break point, but Nadal swats it away with a wide serve. The King of Clay peppers the FedEx backhand and eventually prevails after 7-plus minutes.

HEAD-TO-HEAD: Nadal leads the match-up 23-15 but Federer has won the last six encounters (including a walk/over in the last four at Indian Wells earlier this year). You have to go back to the 2014 Australian Open semi finals for Rafa's last victory.
On clay, Nadal has been dominant as he has won 13 of their 15 meetings on the dirt. The Spaniard has also triumphed on all five occasions they have locked horns in this tournament, including four finals.
