Hello! Welcome to our live coverage of the final quarterfinal at this year's US Open. We have had a few decent matches, but this one between the irrepressible Roger Federer and the majestic showman Gael Monfils may turn out to be the best of the lot.

FEDERER 4-5 MONFILS. No problems for Federer on this hold. A couple of big serves and a couple of poor returns from Monfils give him the hold that forces the Frenchman to attempt to serve out the set.

FEDERER 3-5 MONFILS. The Frenchman finds himself staring down a 0-30 deficit, but he doesn’t panic. A few big serves quickly bring it level at 30-30, then something strange happens. First he lures the Swiss into a forehand error with a series of the weakest and shortest backhands ever seen, then he crushes down a first serve and follows it into the net with an assured, sliding first volley. A big smash down the line just catches the back of the line, and he holds.

FEDERER 3-4 MONFILS. The action-packed opening continues, with both men rushing from side to side and the game played at a break-neck tempo. Some more of the usual athleticism from Monfils comes again as he looks frighteningly focused on securing a second break, but his forehand return really lets him down as Federer keeps himself in touch.

FEDERER 2-4 MONFILS. Monfils’ aggression in his service games have been a feature this fortnight, and they continue as he slinks around to hit his favourite wing and combines with an inside-out forehand and an inside-out forehand winner. A big serve on game point, and he consolidates the break with ease.

FEDERER 2-3 MONFILS. BREAK! La Monf is in the building. An easy Federer forehand looks to be going out, so obviously Monfils, caught in no-man’s land, merely conjures up an incredible 75-ish miles per hour volley from his laces. The pair find themselves at deuce again, Monfils missing game point with a poor passing shot, Federer’s footwork uncharacteristically poor and forcing him to mis-hit and mistime forehands. Eventually it’s Federer’s errors that decide the game and the Frenchman is in the lead.

FEDERER 2-2 MONFILS. There are no such problems for Mr Monfils this time around, however. The serve gets cranking and he stays well away from the wide serve to Federer’s forehand that caused a heck of a lot of issues in his first service game. A forehand miss from Federer brings home the bacon.
01:30
EDERER 2-1 MONFILS. Federer still refuses to have no such problems on his own delivery. The Swiss once again finds himself quickly at 40-0, though this time he dumps a backhand into the net. Monfils, apparently yearning to sit down, helps his opponent along with a bizarre attempt at charging behind a chipped forehand. Before he can charge, though, the chipped forehand flies long.

FEDERER 1-1 MONFILS. It’s not quite as easy for Monfils to capture his first hold as the pair find themselves thrown into the deep end with a tight deuce game. Game point turns into break point and back again, with both men missing easy forehands as they attempt to step into the court. The Frenchie finally gets the hold, but it could have been a disastrous start.

FEDERER 1-0 MONFILS. Federer opens his account with a typical Federer service game. Three rapid first serves out wide bring him to 40-0. He finally misses a first serve, but a harder than usual second delivery wins him a first hold to love.
