Novak Djokovic's bid for a 13th Grand Slam title - and his third at the US Open - remains on course as he booked his place in Sunday's final following a bizarre clash with the enigmatic Monfils. The reigning champion suffered a mini wobble at the end of the first set but soon cruised into a two-set lead before Monfils sparked into life. The pair struggled with apparent injuries/fatigue until Djoker pulled clear in the fourth, breaking Monfils to love to reach his third Slam final of the year.

DJOKOVIC 6-3 6-2 3-6 5-2 MONFILS. Novak is one game away from the 2016 US Open final. The reigning champion does enough, playing some solid, intelligent tennis form 30-30 to consolidate the break. Pressure on Monfils to hold to stay in it.

BREAK! - DJOKOVIC 6-3 6-2 3-6 4-2 MONFILS. Monfils can't level. A couple of double faults and a poor volley gift Nole a BP. The Serb can't take the first but is gifted another that he takes when Monfils dumps one into the net. Both players look spent. Djoker favourite to see this off from here but you never know with Gael!

BREAK! - DJOKOVIC 6-3 6-2 3-6 3-2 MONFILS. Another twist! Monfuils hits straight back as Djoker serves a double fault at double break point. Both players suffering out there. It's bamboozling but compulsive viewing.

BREAK! - DJOKOVIC 6-3 6-2 3-6 3-1 MONFILS. Novak makes the breakthrough. The world number one takes the game on his second BP as Monfils flashes a thumping forehand into the net. It was all set up by a quite sumptuous crosscourt pass after he had somehow retrieved Monfils' sliced prod down the line. The Frenchman looks exhausted. Has he got anything left in the tank to deal with this latest blow.

DJOKOVIC 6-3 6-2 3-6 2-1 MONFILS. Novak doing enough to hold serve. Monfils still playing at a high level but overcooks the angle on a crosscourt drive to allow the Serb to take it to 30.

DJOKOVIC 6-3 6-2 3-6 1-1 MONFILS. What a game! Djoker sees more break points go begging from 0-40. A delicious dropshot gives Monfils an advantage and he takes control from there, sweeping a sublime winner to the left flank he is facing to seal the hold.

DJOKOVIC 6-3 6-2 3-6 1-0 MONFILS. A big hold for Novak. The Serb has to fight hard after Monfils blows his 40-15 lead to shreds to snare a BP. The Serbinator keeps it solid and manages to take the game to take the scoreboard advantage. Rather randomly, there was a big moth on Monfils' back for a chunk of that game - another bizarre moment in this crazy match.

The Frenchman looks to have undone all of his good work by slumping to 0-40. Djoker has the bit between his teeth but isn't allowed to break back. Monfils serves big on first and second deliveries. The bravery is rewarded and he roars with sheer delight as he cuts Djoker's lead in half. Into a fourth set we go! Finally, the match many observers were anticipating has arrived...
