BREAK! - NADAL 0-6 6-4 7-5 1-2 THIEM. And there is the significance! After surviving by the skin of his teeth on serve, Thiem comes out all guns blazing and grabs an early break! At 15-30 Rafa was too deft with his attempt at the disguised drop shot and offered up two BPs. The Spaniard saved one, but was undone by another blistering return.

NADAL 0-6 6-4 7-5 1-1 THIEM. That could be a significant game, particularly if Thiem finds a way back to win this. The Austrian clips the line with a forehand blast at 0-30 but then cracks a simple put-away straight onto Rafa's racket, and the world No.1 blocks it back into the open court. Thiem looks ready to implode but saves both break points with some typically bold and extravagant hitting before getting on the board from deuce.

NADAL 0-6 6-4 7-5 1-0 THIEM. Dominic is buoyed when he scorches a backhand winner up the line to take the first point of Set 4. But any hope Nadal's intensity may have dipped off following the high of his last-gasp break are short-lived as the top seed reels off the next four points to secure the scoreboard advantage.

NADAL 0-6 6-4 7-5 THIEM. A rollercoaster of game eventually goes the way of Nadal and the Spaniard has a 2-1 lead! Thiem survived two set points after being 40-15 ahead as Nadal unloaded two incredible backhand winners up the line. It looked like the Austrian would wriggle out of danger, but he produced a howler on a simple volley at the net to gift the world No.1 a third set point, and Rafa duly powered home a thunderous forehand winner to convert.

NADAL 0-6 6-4 6-5 THIEM. The pendulum swings and Rafa guarantees himself the minimum of a tie break with a love hold. Thiem sits in his chair and looks agitated by his last service game. He needs to let that go now if he's to force the tie break.

BREAK! - NADAL 0-6 6-4 5-5 THIEM. All square! Rafa conjures up a timely break as Thiem has a nightmare. The world No.1 ups the ante with a backhand pass up the line for 15-30 and then has a major break when Domi double faults. The Austrian saves one but then sizzles a backhand long.

NADAL 0-6 6-4 4-5 THIEM. Nadal poses the serve-out question, but he has another mini wobble from 40-0 down before finally clinching to 30 with a delicate volley at the net. Thiem will now serve for the set and a 2-1 lead - with new balls.

NADAL 0-6 6-4 3-5 THIEM. Domi has his tail up and consolidates to 15 with some ridiculous precision-power. Nadal is really up against it now. He must hold to stay in the set.

BREAK! - NADAL 0-6 6-4 3-4 THIEM. A trio of incredible forehand winners put Rafa in control - but Thiem comes roaring back and makes deuce with a brilliant return down the line. The Austrian forces the volley error with a crosscourt pass to earn a BP and this time makes it count with a forehand return winner right out of the top drawer. The No.9 seed has the momentum once again.

NADAL 0-6 6-4 3-3 THIEM. The Dominator is in the zone again now and surges through an impressive hold to 15 with the minimum of fuss.

Yep, it was precision powerhouse-hitting.

NADAL 0-6 6-4 3-2 THIEM. Nadal gets himself out of jail after blowing a 40-0 lead and fending off break point by somehow winning a ridiculous 17-shot rally with a sensational winner up the line. The Spaniard concludes with a rasping crosscourt forehand to keep his nose in front. Will Thiem rue that missed opportunity or is it a sign his level is rising once more?

Not a good stat for Rafa fans if it's correct.
