NADAL 0-4 THIEM. This first set looks beyond Rafa, even with his fighting qualities. Thiem slaps down two aces and a forehand winner to back up the double break to 15. The Austrian already has 11 winners to Nadal's one.
A long way to go for Thiem, but it seems like Nadal will need to alter his tactics if he's to turn the tide.

BREAK! - NADAL 0-3 THIEM. Wow! Thiem has a double break and is completely dismantling the world No.1 at the moment. Another crosscourt backhand winner has the Arthur Ashe crowd's jaws dropping. Rafa rallies from 0-30 to make 30-30 but a double fault offers up the break opportunity. A bruising rally ensues with the crosscourt backhand again just too hot for Nadal to handle.
NADAL 0-2 THIEM. The Dominator is hitting big and showing real intensity. He shrugs off a double fault as he motors to a hold to 15, finishing it off with an ace. Nadal already looking rather concerned - but can Thiem keep this level up in a best of five match?

BREAK! - NADAL 0-1 THIEM. Many observers have been predicting Thiem could well upset Nadal here and he's off to a flyer! A scorching crosscourt backhand winner sets the tone for 0-30 and a similar drive off the forehand tees up two break points. Rafa struggles to contend with the Austrian's power and another devastating forehand winner earns the No.9 seed the immediate break.

Those hoping to see a potential final between Nadal and Roger Federer were left disappointed last night as the Swiss Maestro was surprisingly beaten by Aussie hopeful John Millman. It means Rafa and Roger are still yet to lock horns in New York.

The winner of this will meet Juan Martin Del Potro in the semi final after the giant Argentine saw off the ace-machine that is John Isner.

This meeting in the US Open last eight means nine of their 11 matches have taken place in the quarter finals or beyond. Indeed, they have contested three finals, with Rafa winning all of them, including this year's French Open.
