DJOKOVIC 4-6 4-2 ZVEREV. Sascha shrugs off his third double fault as he lands a crunching serve before finishing the game with a beastly forehand to the postage stamp.
DJOKOVIC 4-6 4-1 ZVEREV. Djokovic takes a tumble and a roll as he struggles to get near a forehand missile from his opponent. It poses a question at 15-30 but he responds with an ace and another big serve to take control. A sharp volley at the net concludes matters and he maintains his advantage.
DJOKOVIC 4-6 3-1 ZVEREV. The No.4 seed recovers some of that rhythm on serve and the cheap points help him on to the board with a game to 15. He needs to find an extra gear again here. Djokovic is still far from his best but he seems to have grown into matches recently and the longer it goes on the more you feel it’s advantage to the world number one.
DJOKOVIC 4-6 3-0 ZVEREV. Sascha’s level has dropped off a cliff. He can’t seem to find the court as his unforced error count begins to race up. Nole nails a brilliant overhead but should be punished for a lazy drop shot. Zverev picks it up but pushes it long and the top seed consolidates with an easy game to love.

BREAK! – DJOKOVIC 4-6 2-0 ZVEREV. You got the feeling that Zverev missed a big opportunity in that first game – and it does very costly. Djokovic gets to attack a run of second serves and makes 30-30 with a wide return. Zverev still has the game in his hands but inexplicably fires a forehand long with Djoker scrambling. The German then capitulates with a double fault and the world number one can sense his moment to get off the canvas. Déjà vu anyone?
DJOKOVIC 4-6 1-0 ZVEREV. Nole kicks off Set 2 with a very tough hold and it could so easily have been a different story. At 0-15 Zverev misses a lob to the baseline by a centimetre and then sizzles a blockbusting forehand just long for 30-30. Another forehand attempt clips the net and bounces wide as the world number one benefits from a run of fortune. The Serb then frames another forehand to allow the German a shot at the break from deuce but despite some pressure Djokovic resisted it and managed to get the job done.

SET! – DJOKOVIC 4-6 ZVEREV. A fifth ace clocks up three set points for the German but then he starts to wobble. A first double fault and a wide backhand wipe out two but then Djokovic misses the chance to turn the screw as he frames a horrible forehand way out of court. For the fourth straight match the top seed drops the opener after a high quality 37 minutes inside Arthur Ashe Stadium.

BREAK! – DJOKOVIC 4-5 ZVEREV. The world number one is the first to crack. A huge crosscourt forehand from Zverev is just too good to get back and earns him two break points. The Serb so often produces clutch moments in these situations, but not this time. He fires down an untimely double fault and Zverev will now serve for the set.
DJOKOVIC 4-4 ZVEREV. Djokovic shows electric pace and lightning reactions to reach a short ball and then react to smash away at the net from Zverev’s block volley. He gets a foothold in the game at 30-15 and dominates the next 21-shot rally but then pulls his forehand just into the left tramlines. A similar error follows in the next point and Zverev ties it up once more.
DJOKOVIC 4-3 ZVEREV. What. A. Game. The fourth seed bites back from 30-0 down and earns a break point with one of the rallies of the past fortnight. He chases down the Serbinator’s drop shot with an exquisite acute angle. Djoker somehow gets there but Zverev is already racing back to his baseline and turns to fire a winner into the open court. He soaks up the crowd’s delight but sees the chance wiped out by a huge 121mph wide serve. Djokovic then pulls off a sup drop shot before the German blows a forehand long to let him off the hook.
DJOKOVIC 3-3 ZVEREV. The man many believe to be the best returner of all-time hasn’t had much to work with up to this juncture. Zverev is hurling down some missiles and polishes off a very comfortable love hold with his third ace of the match.
DJOKOVIC 3-2 ZVEREV. Sascha is allowed to settle into some early rallies and snatches a 0-30 lead with supreme depth to force an error before lashing a venomous crosscourt forehand. Djokovic responds with a run of first serve, dropping in a couple of S and Vs as he turns the game around in style.
DJOKOVIC 2-2 ZVEREV. A pair of aces demonstrate just how well AZ is serving. He’s only dropped a point on serve twice – and that was via second serves. It’ll be interesting to see if he can maintain high percentages for the majority of the match as it’ll be key to his hopes of success.
DJOKOVIC 2-1 ZVEREV. It’s been an excellent opening to this contest with Djoker just shading it with how clean and crisp he’s striking the ball. Zverev gets his first point on the return with some fine depth to his shot-making forcing the error. It’s merely a minor blot on the copybook as the world number one rampages through.
