US Open 2023 men’s singles final result: Novak Djokovic clinches a record-equalling 24th Grand Slam title in the sport by beating Daniil Medvedev at Flushing Meadows

The Serb says he's repeating himself when he says he's achieving a childhood dream.

He jokingly apologises to Medvedev and his wife for spoiling their anniversary and also pays tribute to his opponent and the late, great Kobe Bryant.

"First of all I want to ask Novak, what are you still doing here? C'mon. ... I feel like I have not a bad career and I have 20 titles. You have 24 Grand Slams. Wow."

He goes on to woo the crowd and heap praise on Djokovic as well as apologising to his wife for giving her a 'not-so-good' anniversary present.

Novak Djokovic equals Margaret Court’s record for the most Grand Slam titles in tennis history as he secures his fourth US Open crown with a straight sets victory.

The Serb dominated for long periods and deservedly came through by serving out to 30 after a three-hour and 16-minute tussle on Arthur Ashe Stadium Court.

Djokovic, who returns to World No.1 on Monday, also becomes the first man to win three Grand Slam events in a season for the fourth time (2011, 2015, 2021) and moves two majors ahead of his nearest men’s rival Rafael Nadal (22).

Medvedev thunders down an ace to pose the serve-out question after Djokovic had threatened to break for the title at 0-30.

It may just delay the inevitable as Nole prepares to serve for the title next.

This time Djokovic does consolidate, following up another efficient serve and volley with a forehand winner and a smash. Medvedev then helps him to the clean hold with a backhand long.

Nole is one game away from major No.24.

Djokovic follows up a crosscourt backhand with a sublime, trademark winner down the line.

It helps him snare another break point after Medvedev toiled from 30-0 up.

The Russian pays the price too as a tight backhand skews into the net and hands the initiative straight back to the Serb.

Medvedev has a smidgen of hope as Djokovic implodes looking to consolidate.

A couple of avoidable forehand mistakes and a double fault cough up two break back points and this time the Serb meekly hands it over when he pulls a crosscourt backhand into the tramlines.

It’s looking bleak for Daniil now.

The No.3 seed produces a sumptuous drop shot to make 15-15 but then unravels with a series of near misses, breaking himself with a backhand just long.

Medvedev and Gilles Cervara engage in an angry exchange as the Russian’s coach shouts at his man about his position.

Surely they need to change tact when it comes to trying to defend the obvious serve and volley that Djoker has deployed?

Not on this occasion as the Serb darts to net to close out the game to 30 with another simple volley.

Medvedev needs a strong start and gets one with some hefty serving. He probably needed this much more often and earlier on. Still, he eases on to the board and remains in the hunt despite it being a mammoth task now.

Fresh from coming through a seriously intense and epic set, Djoker charges through a game to 15 to snare the scoreboard advantage.

It’s a real rollercoaster of a breaker. Medvedev wins one of the points of the match when he shows great touch and feel to pick up a drop shot and lead 5-4, but Djokovic comes storming back with the serve and volley teeing up set point before the Russian dumps a backhand into the net. Djokovic is one set away from a fourth US Open title and 24th Grand Slam.

Medvedev makes a fine start with a big crosscourt forehand before Djokovic drills a tight backhand into the net.

The Russian nails another big forehand for a 3-1 lead but then dumps a poor one off that wing into the bottom of the net.

Djoker then slams down a big serve and we are all square at the change of ends.

Djokovic stretches out the arm after a double fault gives Medvedev a slither of an opening at 30-30.

The tense Serb shuts it down with another clutch serve and volley but double faults again to crank up more pressure at deuce.

Medvedev then takes charge of the next rally and secures set point with a bazooka of a backhand down the line.

The Russian has a look at another pass down the line from a serve and volley but opts to go crosscourt and Nole is there to slap away the winner.

Djokovic toils a bit longer, but that serve and volley tactic continues to be a potent weapon for him and is key to him forcing the breaker.

Medvedev picks up a dropshot at 30-30 and finds the baseline with a well-controlled forehand attempt that leads to a simple crosscourt winner.

Djokovic somehow guesses right on a couple of occasions in the next rally and then takes advantage with a forehand pass when Medvedev is too casual with a weak smash.

The Russian shrugs off the pressure at deuce though as a clutch serve is followed by a backhand into the net from Nole.

Djokovic must now hold to take us into a breaker.

Medvedev gives Djokovic a long look as he outlasts the Serb with a big crosscourt forehand to snare the opening point and suggest the Russian could be about to make a move.

Djokovic is having none of it and looks to have got his groove back as he levels with a game to 30.

There’s no let up from Daniil as he blasts his way to a love game to apply that scoreboard pressure at the business end of this set.
