US Open 2023 women’s singles final result: Coco Gauff wins her maiden Grand Slam title after coming from behind to defeat No.2 seed Aryna Sabalenka

Since 2000, Coco Gauff is only the second player to win the women's singles final at the US Open after losing the opening set along with Naomi Osaka, who defeated Victoria Azarenka from a set down in 2020.

Gauff is the first American teenager to win a Women's Singles Grand Slam title this Century and the first since Serena Williams at the US Open 1999.

Gauff is only the fourth teenager competing for the United States of America to win a Women's Singles title at a Grand Slam event in the Open Era, after Chris Evert, Tracy Austin and Serena Williams

She’s done it! The 19-year-old American wins her maiden major on home turf.

Fittingly she steers a backhand up the line to serve out to love and claim a sensational comeback win in two hours and six minutes.

15-0 - Sabalenka blasts a forehand long.

30-0 - Aryna dumps a poor attempt at the drop shot into the net.

40-0 - The Belarusian jumps into a backhand but fires wide

What a response! Gauff’s defence lures the error for 15-30 and Aryna buckles with a double fault.

The American only needs one of two break point, hammering away a forehand after a massive backhand had turned defence into attack.

The 19-year-old will now serve for the title.

Well, the delay certainly did Coco no favours.

The American leaks a couple of errors and is blown away by a bullet forehand from Aryna, who snatches one break back to keep her hopes alive.

Sabalenka is receiving some treatment on her left thigh.

Gauff stays warm by hitting serves.

It threatens to unravel on Aryna from 40-0 up but she gathers her composure and appears to fight back a few tears before crunching a stunning forehand winner to halt the devastating run against her.

The No.2 seed then takes her seat and will be seen by the trainer.

Sabalenka offers a reminder of her threat when she jumps all over a short ball and cannons away a bazooka of a forehand to lead 0-30.

Gauff responds, with the turning point coming when she somehow reaches a huge strike to her backhand wing and recovers in time to ping away a backhand pass following a tentative overhead from the No.2 seed.

A 1-2 punch then puts the American in the driving seat before she closes out via another Sabalenka forehand mistake to consolidate her double break.

Sabalenka’s internal alarm bells must be even more deafening than this pro-Coco crowd.

She looks a little lost out there and keeps changing racquets.

Maybe it helps a touch as she battles back from 0-30 but a wide backhand under pressure from clean hitting from Gauff tees up break point.

The Belarusian can’t solve the puzzle this time as another forehand fizzes long to give the American No.6 seed the double break.

Coco looks quicker to every ball and far more solid than Aryna right now.

The crowd are lapping it up too as she consolidates with an excellent game to 15.

The Sabalenka forehand is so often her major weapon, but right now it’s a bit of a liability.

She dominates a succession of rallies but Gauff’s magnificent defence and desire to fight for every ball is leading to more and more errors into the net.

The Belarusian makes deuce to fend off one but Gauff backs up a brilliant slice pick-up with a volley winner to hit the front for the first time in the match.

Gauff does indeed serve us into a third set as Sabalenka lashes another forehand long.

The key point came at 30-15 when Gauff wrestled the momentum of a blockbusting rally her way and finished it off with a deft volley at the net.

Sabalenka forces the error with a beauty of a backhand up the line to secure a tricky game to 30.

Over to Gauff now to try and serve us into a decider…

Sabalenka’s loose error count continues to tick along too quickly from her point of view as Gauff’s defence demands one more shot.

The American then springs into attack with a sizzling backhand down the line clinch a hold to 15 and move within a whisker of forcing a decider.

If Sabalenka turns this set around, then that point at 30-30 is one to remember.

The No.2 seed can’t quite breach the Coco defence and is caught out by a desperate lob from her opponent. The Belarusian scrambles to her backhand wing but remains ice cool as she turns to hooks an even better crosscourt lob to steal the point and soak up the praise of the crowd.

Gauff then nets a forehand and Aryna stays in contention.
