Medina to play Koukalova

Spanish third seed Anabel Medina Garrigues end the run of Bulgarian teenager Tszvetana Pironkova, 6-4 6-2, in the semi-finals of the Palermo Open on Saturday. Medina Garrigues will tackle Czech Klara Koukalova in the final, after the fifth seed thumped 2004 runner-up Flavia Pennetta 6-4 6-0.

Koukalova leads Medina Garrigues 2-1 in their career series.

In their most recent encounter, Medina retired in the last year's 's-Hertogenbosch semi-finals with a left abdominal strain.
