Pironkova stops Smashnova

Bulgarian 17-year-old Tszvetana Pironkova defeated recent Modena Open champion Anna Smashnova 7-6 (7-0) 6-4 to advance to the Palermo International quarter-finals on Wednesday. Meanwhile, Italian wild card Nathalie Vierin upset sixth seed Marta Domachowsk
Vierin's victory was her first of 2005 and puts her into the last eight of her first tournament since turning professional in 1998. She will take on Pironkova.
In other second round matches, third seed Anabel Medina Garrigues knocked out Spanish compatriot Conchita Martinez Granados 7-5 6-2 and will await the winner of Catalina Castano and Mariana Diaz-Oliva who play on Thursday.
Seventh-seeded Italian Roberta Vinci triumphed over Jelena Kostanic 7-5 6-3. Vinci may face top seed Flavia Pennetta in the quarter-finals, only if Pennetta can rally past Emmanuelle Gagliardi.
