The peloton has changed from the long line it has been all day and the front is turning into a group of favourites and their teams. They are still letting Euskaltel do the work on the front, but it won't be long until this bunch is split between those who have an interest in climbing and those who don't. The four up front are holding a lead of 3' 42".

There is snow everywhere you look now and the riders are putting on gloves and arm warmers. Though they will be making a serious effort during the climbs, the temperatures are close to zero and it is not comfortable weather for cycling in.

Cavendish is determined to prove me wrong today as he sits in behind the orange train in order to stay up front for the next sprint. He's become a very strong overall rider since his stint at Sky last year and is well able to stay at the head of affairs for long periods.

Euskaltel continue on the front, but now there only two riders and they have been joined by some of the Columbia riders. The gap up front is now at 5' 04" and with the next intermediate sprint coming just before the first climb of the day we will not see Mark Cavendish contesting that one.

At the finish line there's a man in a wheelcbair powering his way up the climb through the snow and the fog. A real tough man. The weather up there has changed and now in place of the heavy snow, there is fog.

So I was wrong, Cavendish finds a bit more puff and gets to the front to take the remaining two points at the intermediate sprint point and extend his lead over Evans.

Brutt, Hansen, Popovych and Ermet in that order through first sprint point. The bunch will be coming through in a few minutes. With two points for fifth place does Cavendish have the legs and will Cadel challenge him for those points?

Our four riders out front are doing a very impressive job. They've continued to work hard and have been doing so for over two hours now. The gap is still 5' 35" but despite all the work being done by Euskaltel they are not making major inroads.

We are approaching the first sprint point for the day at Dobbiaco and it's apparent that not only will Mark Cavendish not contest it, but it seems that the breakaway will take the major points with the orange train mopping up the rest. The gap to the leaders is now 5' 52".

There have been one of two riders interrupting the orange line at the front, but without anyone there for any great length of time. At present there is an AG2R rider in there. They will be looking to support Betancur later on today as he battles for the Young Rider jersey. There are only two seconds between himself and Rafael Majka (Saxo Tinkoff).

The breakaway riders did in fact gain some time when the peloton slowed up during the feed zone and the gap is now at 7 minutes. The pace is still being driven along by Euskaltel.

So to recap, our four leaders are still away on their own with a 6' 36" gap. The four are Australian Adam Hansen (Lotto Belisol), Pavel Brutt (Katusha) from Russia, Yaroslav Popovych (Radioshack Leopard) from Ukraine, and Italian Giairo Ermeti (Androni Giacottli).

The Euskaltel chase on the front has irked Nibali and his Astana team mates. Not sure at this stage what the issue is, but there seems to be some tension among the riders towards the front of the group. Meanwhile, Mark Cavendish seems to be struggling with the pace and is languishing down the back of the bunch with a grimace on his face.

The bunch still have 5' 45" out front and they flew through the feed zone disinterested in taking a musette. They will have calculated that they can gain a few extra seconds as the bunch slow up a bit to eat.

For those of you used to following the graphic on the top of this feed to see where we are in the stage, we apologise that it's not available today due to route changes. However, we hope you are enjoying our live comments and that you will stick with us right to the finish.

That first climb, the Passo Tre Croci comes at just over 23km from the finish. A category 2 climb with a gradient of 7% and 8km in length it will warm the legs up for the final challenge. After 7km of a slight descent, the riders will hit the last climb of the Giro, the ascent of the Tre Cime di Lavaredo. The first kilometre of this climb has sections of 18% gradient and in the final two kilometres there are sections of 20%.

We'll be passing through the feed zone shortly and the riders may take this opportunity to cover up a bit. The weather will begin to get colder and between here and the first climb we have the two intermediate sprint points so things may get hectic. The gap now is just over 6 minutes.

Interestingly, though Euskaltel only have four riders drilling it on the front of the bunch, they have been one of the few teams to be largely unaffected by withdrawls. They did lose one rider, but still have eight riders in the race. Only four teams still have their full compliment, those being Cannondale, Lotto Belisol, Movistar and Vacansoleil.

At the halfway mark the gap has dropped below seven minutes and the road has begun the gradual rise. The gradient will continue to intensify right up to our first climb of the day, the Passo Tre Croci at in about 90km.

Adam Hansen is a serious strong man and all round gutsy rider. He may not stay out until the finish today, but he's certainly not shy about giving it a go. Who is your rider of the Giro so far and why?

Interestingly Adam Hansen (Lotto Belisol) is wearing a skin suit today. I'm sure he has no intention of sprinting at any stage so maybe he's just run out of clean clothes. He is also wearing shoes he made himself. Fabircated from superlight carbon they have served him well thus far. Their gap is no 7' 03". Coming down slightly.
