Interestingly Adam Hansen (Lotto Belisol) is wearing a skin suit today. I'm sure he has no intention of sprinting at any stage so maybe he's just run out of clean clothes. He is also wearing shoes he made himself. Fabircated from superlight carbon they have served him well thus far. Their gap is no 7' 03". Coming down slightly.

Sky lead the team standings with Movistar in second place. Sky could be well placed on the final climbs of the day should Rigoberto Uran have a good stage. The Columbian currently stands in third overall at 4' 12" behind Vincenzo Nibali.

The gap still sits at 7' 28" as four Euskaltel riders continue to line out the bunch and put everyone under pressure. No idea why they are doing this, but I'm sure it will become apparent as te stage unfolds. The average speed so far is 46km/h.

We have some sun out on the road. A novelty for this Giro. It's been wet and cold on the majority of days and it has taken its toll on riders. Meanwhile it's still snowing fairly heavily at the finish and still -3 degrees.

As the Euskatel team continue to drive on at the front of the bunch, the red jersey of Cavendish is sitting back down the bunch. Vincenzo Nibali is also only 10 points down on Cavendish so assuming Evans and Nibali do battle for stage honours today, Cavendish may well lose the jersey today, but he will be confident that he can wrestle it back tomorrow.

There's plenty of shuffling going on within the peloton and after a brief appearance, Omega Pharma Quick Step have been nudged off the front and replaced by Euskaltel Euskadi with Astana following closely behind.

To recap, the break is made up of Adam Hansen (Lotto Belisol), Pavel Brutt (Katusha(, Yaroslav Popovych (Radioshack Leopard) and Giairo Emerti (Androni Giocattoli). Their gap is 6' 40".

Omega Pharma Quick Step come to the front of the peloton to take some control as the gap draws out to 8.16 for the four leaders. Mark Cavendish is obviously interested in collecting a few more points towards his red jersey today. He is aiming to make it a full house having already won the points classification in the two other Grand Tours.

The weather on the road is realtively warm and dry at the moment as the breakway discuss tactics. The final climb today is a torturous 12.4 per cent average climb with spots where it hits 18 per cent. This will be a leg burner and with the combination of difficult terrain and the terrible weather there may be huge gaps as riders cross the finish line.

Euskaltel have decided to show themselves at the front of the bunch and bring some urgency to proceedings, but it will take some chasing to close down the gap of six minutes while the breakaway are still full of energy.

The road begins to rise from about halfway through this stage and it will be really energy sapping for such a small group to stay away until the end. At the finish it's -3 degrees and almost a white-out so let's hope that they all get there in one piece.

Correction: The group of four is Hansen (Lotto Belisol), Brutt (Katusha), Yaroslav Popovych (Radioshack Leopard), and Emeti (Androni Giocattoli). Their gap is now nearly 6 minutes.

The lead is still growing out for the quartet up front as they are now 2.35 clear. This bodes well for an exciting finish as the GC contenders will not be over exerting themselves too early in the stage.

The change of route has left us without a progress bar at the top of this feed. Apologies for this, but we will keep you right up to date with all the action as it happens.

The escapees have extended their lead to 1.15. The best placed of these riders is Australian Hansen who is over two hours behind Nibali. Their ambition will be to gain some much needed air time for their sponsors and try and hang out there as long as possible. Though you never know, with rain forecast along the route and snow at the finish, maybe they just want to get off their bikes as quickly as possible.

With 35km of racing done, a break is developing. It includes Stage 7 winner Adam Hansen (Lotto Belisol), Pavel Brutt (Katusha), Giairo Emeti (Androni Giacattoli) and Jens Mouris (Orica GreenEdge). They have 55 seconds on the bunch.

Mark Cavendish (Omega Pharma Quick Step) is holding on the red points jersey by a slender 4 points. His nearest challenger is Cadel Evans (BMC), although I would doubt he will be focused on collecting points today, the intermediate sprints come at 156km and again at 187.9km, a point when Evans will be up front keeping himself out of trouble and in the mix. It may mean that the Manx Missile has to pick up a few points tomorrow to get his hands on the red jersey.

The battle for the Maglia Rosa looks set to come down to the final climb today on the Tre Cime Di Lavaredo. Vincenzo Nibali (Astana) has a 4.02 cushion over Cadel Evans (BMC) and Rigoberto Uran (Sky) is a 4.12. Next in line is Michele Scarponi (Lampre-Merida), but at 5.12 down he will be looking to cement his fourth spot.

169 riders left the start this morning in Silandro. We lost Robert Gesink (Blanco) yesterday. He wasn't in good form in the time trial on Thursday and decided to call it a day. Also absent is of course the aforementioned Di Luca.

The route for today looks like this. We've lost the climbs of the Passo Costalunga, Passo San Pellegrino and the Passo Giau, but the last 20km of the race should still be enough to decide the winner of the Maglia Rosa for 2013.

Following Vincenzo Nibali's dominance in the TT on Thursday, there is now a gap of over 4 minutes between himself and his nearest rival BMC's Cadel Evans. Unless he cracks today the Maglia Rosa would seem to be his. However, the white jersey is still up for grabs in what is turning out to be quite the contest between Saxo-Tinkoff's Rafal Majka and AG2R's Carlos Betancur. There are only two seconds between them on GC so expect fireworks today.
