Good evening and welcome to the biggie - Chelsea host Manchester United in an all-English Champions League quarter-final, the first leg kicking off at Stamford Bridge at 7.45pm UK time.

Essien gets outside Rooney on the Chelsea left but Ferdinand is there to head the cross away.

Ferdinand long for Hernandez but Cech claims easily and launches the counter immediately. Nothing doing though as United snuff it out.

United keep ball for a spell as Rafael sends Valencia away, good cross but Ivanovic hooks it out for a throw.

Zhirkov is booked for a very high boot while he and Hernandez flew in for a high ball.

Lampard with a super ball to Torres on the right and he races in, Vidic comes in and Torres hits the deck... goal kick. United are furious, they think Torres dived but he's insisting he didn't. No contact either way, and Torres did not appeal.

Essien's finish hits Carrick and floats into Van der Sar's arms after Terry acted as impromptu playmaker with some neat feet and a lay-off to the Ghanaian.

Rafael has to put behind his own goal after a great low cross from Bosingwa. Torres failed to attack it though. Corner, but Hernandez heads Zhirkov's ball out for a throw.

Jeers from the away fans as Torres mis-kicks a bicycle kick after some lovely interplay with Zhirkov. Promising though...

Valencia fouls Cole this time and Chelsea take it too quickly... Now Lampard keeps it short. He gets it back but telegraphs a pass to Giggs. United give it away though. Scrappy.

A couple of aimless long ones from either keeper eat up a minute or so.

A lull in play, as is required after a frantic quarter hour and an equally zippy opening 10 minutes...

Rooney is fine though as he skins a very wooden-looking Essien but runs into Ivanovic.

Ramires catches Rooney late but play-on as United retain possession. Eventually there's a handball and play is stopped. That was very late again, but again no card - I was mistaken re: Essien.

Wayne Rooney, after a season that can best be described as 'indifferent', is finding his best form right when it counts. Chelsea are scrapping in midfield as Ramires finds Drogba, who flies into Rafael... and concedes a goal kick.

GOAL UNITED! Rooney! Who'd have thunk it! A sweeping Hollywood pass from Carrick to Giggs on the left, who leaves Bosingwa for dead with a quite superb first touch and finds Rooney with an even better cut-back - Rooney crashes it in off the post, picking his spot perfectly. Super goal.

Drogba heads it away but United get the ball back...

Rooney settles for a corner after Hernandez's looped ball strikes a defender. Vidic, Ferdinand and co. stride upfield...

A weak flick by Lampard lets Ferdinand knock it back to Van der Sar. He clears and Cole gives away a free-kick, shoving Valencia in the back.

The corner is cleared by United and Zhirkov fouls Valencia as he tried to run it. Quickly taken, Rooney wide to Hernandez, back into Rooney in the area but a poor second touch takes it away from goal and he runs it out.

TIPPED OVER BY VAN DER SAR! Super smashing, crashing effort from Drogba after a sweet first touch that took him into the rigth-hand side of the box. Good passing before too.
