GOAL! ANELKA DISPATCHES THE PENALTY! Nonchalant strike - he sends it low to Mandanda's left and the goalkeeper is frozen to the spot. Anelka goes to celebrate with someone in the stands - or as near as he can go without picking up a caution.

Two yellows - one for M'bia and one for Heinze who complained so hard.

PENALTY FOR CHELSEA! M'bia blocks a cross from Essien and it hits him on the arm! Chance for a big gap for the Blues...

CHANCE FOR CHEYROU! The ball landed at his feet on the edge of the box and he had a little more time than he thought. He snatched at it, and it's another warning shot!

Kabore has space on the right but opts to pass inside - they've made a few cautious decisions like that.

Zhirkov has been quiet but he does a good job here of picking out Malouda, whose cross is only just behind Anelka and Kakuta.

Chelsea make a real mess of defending that corner - Essien and Alex both miss opportunities to clear and Brandao was only a whisker away from making a telling contact with the ball from a couple of yards out. Warning shot!

Remy should have done better with a chance to cross but he does win a corner and Cheyrou will take it.

Heinze, playing well upfield, plays the ball towards Lucho. He didn't fare well against Chelsea when he was at United - he lost five games.

Remy tries to barge his way past Alex in the Chelsea box, and the referee awards Chelsea a free kick.

That said, Marseille have settled a little more in the last few minutes. Brandao spreads the ball right, where Remy takes on Cole for a way down the line - and loses out.

59% possession for Chelsea so far - they've looked good on the ball when they've had it too.

Cisse holds the ball up for a moment as Marseille look to rebuild. The ball comes to Cheyrou who opts to shoot. It's a poor effort from distance - high and long.

TOO CLEVER! Cole, playing virtually as a winger, plays a great cross Malouda's way but he opts to dummy when he had a great chance himself, and there was nobody behind him!

Cole bursts down the wing before laying it back for Malouda. His cross is cleared by M'bia.

That was our first sighting of Gignac, the talented forward, playing a dangerous-looking ball in from the left hand side. Cleared by the Blues.

A quarter of an hour in, and Marseille's bright first five minutes seems like a distant memory. Chelsea looking sharp and full of quality.

CHANCE FOR ANELKA! It's a great ball to him from Kakuta, but the Frenchman drills his shot directly at the Marseille keeper!

Essien is playing with customary assurance, releasing Ashley Cole this time. The full-back loses possession as he tries to steal in to the Marseille box.

MALOUDA GOES CLOSE AGAIN! He's been a livewire all season and he's at it again, cutting in from the wing on to his right foot and he makes a firm connection which only just goes over Mandanda's goal!

Drogba is watching from the bench. His suspension ends after this game. Doubtless he'd like to have lined up against his former club, but it would hardly be the start of the Champions League season if Drogba weren't finishing a suspension from the previous campaign...
