That was close! Messi plays a wonderful pass through to Neymar, getting in behind the Elche backline, but the Brazilian puts his half volley wide of the target. He tried to lob it over the goalkeeper.

Rakitic is trying his best to make an impression. Some would argue that he hasn't really been given a fair chance by Enrique this season, but he has an opportunity to impress tonight.

It is a very eery atmosphere inside the Camp Nou tonight. It's barely half full for this game, which may provide some sort of comment on the discontent among the club's fans right now.
    25'
Elche have equipped themselves quite well so far. Sure, they have hardly ventured out from their own half but they have been solid at the back and have prevented Barca from breaking them down.

Looking at the bench, Enrique doesn't have too much in the way of options. Iniesta is there, but Xavi and Busquets have been dropped completely from the matchday squad. Ruthless.

Another shooting opportunity for Barcelona. Neymar dribbles past a couple of defenders before making a short pass to Messi, who shoots at goal from 20 yards, but Tyton is on hand to make the simple save.
    21'
Messi is now dropping deep into midfield to receive the ball. And he is seeing more of the possession, but I suppose that's not really where you need the little Argentine. He plays best closer to goal.

That wasn't far away at all! Messi's freekick into the area is punched clear by Tyton, only for Alves to volley an effort towards goal. But his effort bounces past the post with the keeper stranded.

Rakitic wins a freekick on the edge of the box from Lomban, and that's why the Croatian has been brought into the team. He provides something that neither Xavi, Iniesta or Busquets does.
    18'
Elche are making it very difficult for Barcelona to pick their way through their defence. They are camped deep inside their own box, with Cristian the only player giving them an outlet up front.
    17'
Of course, Messi might not be at full optimum level yet. He Alves and Neymar have been punished by Enrique for not training as much as the rest of the team over Christmas, even though the Barca boss gave them three extra days holidays.
    16'
Neymar is seeing plenty of the ball out on the left side of the pitch, with most of Barcelona's attacking play coming through him. Messi has been missing in action so far. Not hugely involved.

Apologies for the delay in getting updates to you. We had a minor technical issue on our end but we're back under way now. You'll be pleased to learn that you didn't really miss much.

It actually looks like Elche are playing with no less than SEVEN players at the back. Of course, there is a second leg to this tie, so perhaps they are holding out for that game. Parking the bus, indeed.
    8'
But he's back in the team tonight and is the focal point of Barcelona's attack, flanked by Suarez and Neymar. Those three can certainly cause damage. Will they put Elche to the sword tonight?
    7'
The troubles at Barcelona of late have prompted rumours about Messi's future at the club. He was benched for the game against Sociedad and seems to be unhappy at Camp Nou.
    6'
Elche already find themselves camped deep inside their own half, with Barcelona applying the pressure on the away side. How long can they hold out for against such a quality side?
    5'
That would have been a very nice goal! Suarez and Neymar combine well inside the area, but the Brazilian tries to cut it back for Rakitic when he probably should have taken the shot himself.
    4'
Enrique has made no less than eight changes to the team that lost to Sociedad at the weekend, with Xavi, Iniesta and Busquets all dropped from the side. Ter Stegen comes in as well.
