Parolo chips an angled ball from his own half to Pelle, but the Southampton striker strays offside.

El Shaarawy runs at Aleksandrov in the box and the Bulgaria defender manages to get a tackle in, then Parolo concedes the foul in second-phase possession.

CHANCE: El Shaarawy wins a free-kick on the left-hand edge of the area. Pelle cannot divert Verratti's drilled free-kick on target in the six-yard box.

Chiellini is left dazed after getting Boduruv's hand in his face when competing for Verratti's floated free-kick to the back post.

SAVE: Buffon is brilliantly down to his right to get a strong hand onto Mitsanski's shot from outside the box, following De Rossi's mistake in midfield.

Italy switch the ball from right to left, but Candreva, cutting inside onto his left foot, shoots well over Mitrev's bar.

El Shaarawy tries a flick round the corner to Parolo but Veselin Minev is back to clear. That is a nice try from the 22-year-old though - the former Milan forward looks sharp tonight.

Candreva is down for treatment following an elbow to the ribs from Nikolay Boduruv.

A period of Bulgaria possession is ended by a Verratti interception and Bonucci completes the clearance. Verratti is going to be a key player for Italy at the base of the midfield.

Monaco striker El Shaarawy takes down Pelle's cute chest down but his shot is well wide of Mitrev's goal.

Candreva breaks down the right but his deep cross is over the head of the stretching El Shaarawy and Nedelev clears.

Italy play their way out of danger down the right - Conte's team look in control after the early goal.

Goalkeeper Mitrev miskicks and concedes a throw in a dangerous position. Italy are unable to make anything of the opportunity though.

Pelle overhits a pass wide to Candreva and Bulgaria have a throw down the left.

Chiellini is fouled by Mitsanski and Italy have a free-kick deep into their own half.

GOAL: Italy 1-0 Bulgaria. De Rossi sidefoots the ball into the right-hand corner for his 17th international goal in his 101st game for Italy.
