Turan plays a chipped pass over the top of the Betis defence looking for Costa but the flag is up against the striker, and this time it's the correct decision.

Jordi , of all people, almost manages to bundle his way through three Atletico players on the break but the ball runs just out of play on the right side. That would have seen him clean through!

So can Atletico Madrid find the goal and the result that would take them to the top of La Liga before tonight's Clasico? They have 45 minutes to do so.

Well that was an eventful first half, although not much in the way of clearcut goalscoring opportunities. Costa v Paulao has been the entertainment so far, with the Atletico Madrid striker seemingly on a mission to start on every opposition player before half-time.

HALF TIME: Real Betis 0-0 Atletico Madrid

A scramble inside the penalty area sees Costa and Paulao go head-to-head once again, but this time the battle is clean, with the Betis defender blocked the shot from the Atletico Madrid striker.

So often this season Atletico Madrid have found the breakthrough before half-time. Can they do it again? They have about a minute to do so.

Well that was always going to happen. Paulao has just gone through Costa, leaving his foot in once the ball was gone. And once again the referee keeps his cards in his book and waves away the Atletico players.

YELLOW CARD: Filipe Luis (Atletico Madrid)

Now Costa and Jordi are facing off. This is becoming a joke. Amazingly Costa escapes once again without receiving a booking.

The referee decides not to book Costa and the Spain inernational striker gets away with one.

Costa is making friends again, this time piling Paulao into the advertising hoardings when the ball was gone. The Betis players are surrounding the referee, trying to pressure him into a decision.

Atletico Madrid need to find more control through the centre of their midfield. Too often the ball has gone long for Costa and with Paulao marking him it's very difficult to create anything from that.

That tackle by Jordi was crucial. You would have expected Costa to have scored from there had he got his shot off.

Good chance for Costa! The striker latches onto a long ball forward, with just one player between him and the Betis goal. However, Jordi does very well to push him wide and then make the challenge.

I wouldn't like to meet this Atletico team in a dark alley. They know how to fight and scrap. Not sure if that's a good thing on the football pitch but they make themseleves very awkward to face.

After a good spell of dominance by Atletico the home side have responded well. Betis are seing a lot of the ball at the moment and are slowing down the pace of the game.

Rodriguez is brought down on the edge of the box by Suarez but the referee waves away his claims for a freekick. The Atletico Madrid midfielder did appear to catch the Betis player with an elbow as they jumped for the ball.
