Rodriguez is brought down on the edge of the box by Suarez but the referee waves away his claims for a freekick. The Atletico Madrid midfielder did appear to catch the Betis player with an elbow as they jumped for the ball.

This game is heating up, with Rodriguez shown the game's first yellow card. Of couse, Costa looks keen to pick up a booking of his own. He's squaring up to pretty much everyone and making a pest of himself.

Betis come forward down the left side but the Rory Delap-style long throw in from Juan Carlos is cleared by the Atletico Madrid defence.

So Atletico should probably be ahead but the goal was ruled out for offside. It was a great finish by Costa at the near post. There's a case to be made that he's the best all-round striker in Europe right now.

Well that was a close call. Not sure the linesman got that one right. Costa looked to be in line with the last defender when the ball was flicked on to the back post.

Costa has the ball in the net but it's been ruled out for offside! The Brazilian-born striker smashed home at the near post but he was adjudged to have strayed offside from a flick on in the box.

Turan jinks his way through a couple of Betis tackles before crossing into the six yard box from the byline but Chica positions himself well to make the clearance with his head. Crucial.

Betis whip a freekick into the penalty area but the referee blows up for a foul after spotting Paulao had his hands on the back of Godin. Good decision by the officials.

Even though this game has been played at a fast pace and has been quite open so far, there have been very few clearcut opportunities in these opening 20 minutes. Garcia and Costa look lively but are yet to create anything.

Rodriguez is down on the turf after getting a hefty elbow into the ribs from Juanfran. Looked sore but not sure it was intentional from the Atletico Madrid right back.

Costa and Paulao are at each other again and when a quick freekick is taken Costa clashes with the Betis keeper, Adan. And now he's starting on him. He's becoming a parody of himself.

Juan Carlos is seeing a lot of space down the left side. He's almost playing as a winger, rather than a defensive full-back. I suspect Juanfran will need to get closer to him from now on.

Betis win a freekick just inside the Atletico half but Juan Carlos' freekick is poor and actually lands on top of the opposition net, having been watched all the way by Courtois.

You just get the feeling that Atletico are starting to turn the screw on Betis here. They're seeing more of the ball.

Bizarre freekick from Atleti. Instead of shooting from the edge of the box Gabi rolls the ball into Godin, who has no time to turn inside the box and is crowded out as he attempts a shot on goal.

And now Costa and Paulao are in each other's faces, after the Betis defender brought him down about 18 yards out from goal. The Spanish international looks fired up, but then he always does.

Costa and Amaya square up to each other after a tussle on the edge of the box. The Atletico Madrid striker makes friends wherever he goes.

Betis are dealing quite well with Atletico's high pressing game. So many Liga teams crumble when pressed so hard by Simeone's side but the home side have looked fairly comfortable with it so far.

It's just as well we don't watch these games in black and white anymore, because both Betis and Atletico are wearing their trademark striped shirts. Sometimes difficult to tell them apart.

First shot on goal from Costa but after dropping back to about 10 yards out from goal to receive the pass from Luis on the left wing he scoops his shot well over the crossbar. Good idea though.
