What happened there? Varane and Pepe almost mess up a pass from Casillas, but the Real Madrid goalkeeper recovers and Jonathas can't make the most of the error between the three players.

That could have gone badly wrong for Pepe. The Real Madrid central defender comes close to handling an awkward cross into the box, but the Portuguese international gets away with it.

That last counter attack summed up this performance from Real Madrid so far. They looked good until they made it into the final third, where their undoubted quality deserted them.

For the first time this evening Real Madrid are afforded the chance to go on the counter attack with Ronaldo, but the delivery from Isco into the penalty area is an especially poor one.

Elche have offered very little going forward themselves. I'm actually struggling to think of a time when they have ventured out beyond their own half. Jonathas has seen nothing of the ball.

This has been a strange performance from Real Madrid so far. They have been completely dominant in the opening half hour, but they still are lacking that confidence in front of goal.

Good effort from Ronaldo. Kroos whips the freekick into the area, with Ronaldo hanging in the air to meet it. But his header flies over the angle of post and crossbar. Not bad, but not on target.

That booking had been coming for quite some time. Elche have put in a number of dangerous tackles on Real Madrid players, and this time Albacar takes out Bale in full flight.

The tempo has dropped in Real Madrid's play in the last few minutes. They had built up a head of steam but they are taking a breather for the time being right now. Still in control of the contest though.

How has he not scored that? Bale plays a great pass across the face of goal for Ronaldo to finish, but he gets distracted by the challenge of Roco and compeletly fluffs his effort. Oh dear.

Now Ronaldo has gone down in the penalty area under the challenge of Roco, but the referee once again waves away the Real Madrid number seven's claims for a spot kick.

Benzema should have taken the shot himself! The French attacker jinks back and shoot take it on himself from six yards out, but he tries to threa through Ronaldo and the interception is made.

That was a tight angle! The cross comes into Ronaldo at the back post, with the Real Madrid number seven unmarked. But the angle is tight and his shot flashes across the face of goal.

It might still be goalless, but this is a very entertaining contest. It's getting fiesty between the two sides too. This time Ronaldo is upset with the officials for not awarding him a freekick.

Tyton is called upon to make another good save! Ronaldo takes a snap shot from the best part of 25 yards, but the Elche goalkeeper makes the punch away to clear the danger.

It will be interesting to see how the partnership between Silva and Kroos develops in the centre of the Real Madrid midfield. Is the Brazilian a replacement for Xabi Alonso, now that he's at Bayern Munich?

The away side are completely dominating this game right now. Elche simply can't make any progress beyond their own half, and when they do their attacking players are making poor decisions.
