This has been a peculiar first half. Barcelona started well, but they aren't pressing as they were early on, they haven't created a chance in a while and look vulnerable at the back!

Should have scored! Villarreal should be 1-0 up. The marking from Barcelona at the corner kick was dreadful, Torres was completely free six yards out, but he heads over the target!

DANJUMA... he was offside! The Villarreal attacker was played in behind, he fired his slow strike across the face of goal and just inches wide of the far post. But the flag was raised.

In fact, it was a double booking as Pino was also flashed a yellow card!

It should be noted that Alba was shown a yellow card a few moments ago.

There is a sense that Villarreal are now growing into the game after a slow start. Barcelona have stepped off the home side in terms of their pressing. That's interesting!

Header over! Pau headed a cross back across the box, Pino jumped higher than his marker, but the Villarreal attacker could only guide his header over the crossbar. What a leap, though!

However, Barcelona have failed to win any of their last five away matches in La Liga. For a team of their quality and stature, that is quite remarkable. Barca need to improve on the road.

Barcelona have scored two or more goals in each of their last nine meetings against Villarreal (all competitions). They will do well to keep that run going this evening.

PICTURE: Memphis should have scored!

The omens are good for Barcelona this evening. Indeed, the Catalans are unbeaten in their last 26 meetings against Villarreal in all competitions. This is a one-sided rivalry!

Villarreal are a strong side and so a victory for Barcelona this evening would be their first real statement with Xavi as manager that they are truly heading in the right direction.

Last week’s performance against Espanyol was very impressive for 70 minutes, but then Barcelona’s fitness levels fell off a cliff and they were ultimately fortunate to claim three points.

Memphis started the season well after making the move to Barcelona from Lyon, but the Dutch international has struggled for form in recent matches. He could do with a goal.

Wide of the target! Memphis is slotted in behind the opposition defence, but the Dutch forward puts his shot wide of the post when he really should have hit the target!

In fairness to Barcelona, they have played with attacking verve in the first 15 minutes of this match. Nonetheless, the Catalans have failed to make the breakthrough early on.

It’s fair to say that Barcelona have looked more like Barcelona in the two matches they have played under Xavi, but they need to show more in the way of goal threat in the final third.

Xavi has enjoyed a difficult start as Barca boss. While the Catalans claimed victory over Espanyol last weekend, they were held to a 0-0 draw at home to Benfica in the Champions League during the week.
