The winners of the Swiss league championship could be determined in court following a decision by FC St Gallen to appeal against a recent points deduction.
The Swiss league's disciplinary commission last week turned a 0-0 draw between St Gallen and FC Zurich into a 3-0 win for the league leaders after ruling that St Gallen had fielded an ineligible player for the last 26 minutes of the match.
The side from eastern Switzerland said they would appeal to the international Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS), also based in Switzerland, in the hope of overturning the decision.
St Gallen say they were told by a league official that the player in question was allowed to play despite being sent off the day before while playing for the club's under-21 side.
"After consulting with several renowned lawyers, the board of FC St Gallen is confident that CAS will correct the false decision," said a statement on the club's official website.
Title holders FC Zurich are just three points clear of nearest rivals FC Basel but would lose two of those points if CAS were to uphold St Gallen's appeal.
The Zurich club were eight points clear halfway through the season but have seen their lead whittled down after winning just six of their 12 games since the end of the winter break.
