After much deliberation it's Emenike who runs up to the ball and strikes towards the goal, but his effort sails over the bar. The idea was obvious and the execution was poor. Should he have left it to Mikel?
    17'
Matuidi fouls Odemwingie on the edge of the box, giving Nigeria a very opportunity to line up a shot from a dangerous position. Mikel and Emenike stand over it.
    16'
Good opportunity for France on the counter attack, with Valbuena in acres of space. However, Benzema delays the pass for a split second too long and decides to pick out Giroud instead, who fires his shot over the bar.
    15'
Onazi has been taken off the pitch on a stretcher. Indeed, it doesn't look good for the Nigerian midfielder. Meanwhile, the freekick is swung into the box but it comes to nothing for the Africans.

Onazi and Pogba seem to have hurt themselves and we have a delay in the game at the moment. It was a clean tackle from the Nigerian but there was a tangling of legs.
    12'
It's been a lively 10 minutes or so, but I can't say that there has been a great deal of quality on show from either teams so far. Nigeria are full of running but they need to tighten things up in midfield.
    11'
Varane has been impressive for France at this World Cup. There were concerns over his fitness ahead of the tournament, having missed so much of the season at Real Madrid, but those fears have remained unrealised so far.
    10'
Benzema was somewhat slack in possession there, allowing Onazi to come forward with the ball at his feet. But his pass to pick out Emenike was poor and Varane came across to cut it out. Better quality in the final third needed, again.
    9'
Pogba is being afforded so much space in the centre of the midfiel. Whenever he gets the ball he has acres to stride into, and boy does he stride with those long legs of his!
    8'
Musa is looking to get on the ball as often as he can, and he has to be the overriding success story of this World Cup for Nigeria. No Nigerian player had scored more than one goal in a World Cup match before the Argentina match.
    7'
Mikel is wearing the number 10 shirt for Nigeria today. Just let that sink in. He's their number 10.
    6'
Nigeria have started brightly, with Odemwingie coming close to getting a shot away in the penalty area. They're just lacking a bit of quality in the final at the moment. They look dangerous though.
    5'
And now France surge forward, with Matuidi driving deep from midfield to the byline. The PSG man tries to square the ball back to Giroud, but Yobo is on hand again to clear it behind for a corner kick.
    4'
Indeed, both sides have started on the front foot, with Nigeria this time coming forward at speed. They win a corner, but France clear the delivery at the front post. Cross needs to be better than that.
    3'
Debuchy gets down the right side and almost manages to pick out Benzema inside the penalty area, but Yobo steps out to make a timely interception. The Real Madrid striker was winding up an effort there.
    2'
We should expect a really attacking and entertaining game here this afternoon, with both teams' strength up front. France are playing in an unfamiliar white shirt, with Nigeria in all green.

We're under way in Brasilia! It's France v Nigeria for a place in the World Cup quarter-finals!
    16:55
The teams are out for the anthems, and unlike the opening game of the tournament they haven't forgotten to play Les Marseillaise for the French. France win the anthems battle. They always do.
    16:50
So the big team news fo France, if you missed it, is that Olivier Giroud starts up front with Karim Benzema. Those two will be a real handful for Nigeria, and they must avoid going behind early like Switzerland did last week.
