Uruguay’s route to the last 16 has been much more straight forward - much less dramatic than Portugal’s. Wins over Egypt, Saudi Arabia and hosts Russia have almost gone unnoticed and Óscar Tabárez’s side have progressed without even conceding a goal, thanks to the simply brilliant Diego Godin, who has probably been the player of the tournament thus far.

Portugal manager Santos was quick to come to the rescue of his team, insisting the target of the nation was just to make it out of the group.
"The important thing is to think about the [round of 16] match, think about the game, get to know your adversaries and then to get well prepared mentally and physically, regardless of it being Uruguay or the hosts," he said.
"These are different circumstance of course, the hosts have huge support and they've had a very good tournament, while Uruguay has high quality and top-notch players and they're all excellent – but Portugal too. We have our weapons and we're going to try to win."

Portugal were set to top their group until they conceded a last minute VAR-assisted penalty against Iran which was converted by Karim Ansarifard to draw the game level at 1-1. Had they won the game Fernando Santos’ side would have played Russia, arguably a much easier tie than Uruguay. So, will they pay the full cost of the penalty?

Team news then and we will start with Uruguay. Jose Gimenez returns to centre-back after missing the Russia game with a back injury. In attack it's the deadly duo Luis Suarez and Edinson Cavani.
For Portugal left-back Raphael Guerreiro is welcomed back to the fold and they are boosted by the presence of William Carvalho in midfield - the 26-year-old was a doubt after missing a training session on Thursday. And of course Cristiano Ronaldo starts in attack, hoping to add to his four goals at this year's finals. Ricardo Quaresma has to make do with a place on the bench, despite scoring that wonder goal against Iran.
