Perhaps the crucial frame in Selby’s win over Hawkins was the opening one, as the momentum went back and forth over nearly an hour.
Hawkins moved 37-4 ahead but Selby hit back and was close to winning the frame before allowing his opponent back to the table. After a lengthy safety exchange it came down to the final few balls and Hawkins looked to have won it after potting a long blue, only to miss the pink and be punished by Selby.
Hawkins did level in the next frame with breaks of 54 and 76, but Selby won the next two in a row to open up a 3-1 lead.
There was no way back for Hawkins as Selby took the last frame 66-1 to secure his progress.
Stuart Bingham held off a comeback from Ricky Walden to win 4-3 and advance into the second round.
Bingham looked set for a routine win as he moved 3-1 ahead thanks to breaks of 96, 93 and 65, but Walden levelled at 3-3. Bingham raised his game at the crucial moment and won with a break of 124.
Bingham will face either David Gilbert or Ali Carter in the next round.
Judd Trump is in action against Ben Woollaston on Tuesday evening while Ronnie O’Sullivan starts his campaign against Andy Hicks on Wednesday.
Former world number one John Higgins lost to Tom Ford in their round one match.
The scores were level at 2-2 after both of them hit half centuries but in the final two frames Ford pulled away.
A break of 71, and then 130 with no reply from the Scot saw him through.
David Gilbert struggled for form as he lost 4-1 to Ali Carter in their match-up.
Carter never trailed in the match as he won the first two frames, scoring 77 along the way. Gilbert halved the deficity witha a 57 of his own in the third frame, before 92-0 and 73-0 in the next two frames won it for Carter.
