BREAK! - DJOKOVIC 5-1 FEDERER. Wow. Talk about saving your best for the big occasion. Djokovic's returning has been on another level. The Serb forces Fed-Ex to fizz long to tee up double break point before another brilliant return, that most players wouldn't get near, sets up a barnstorming rally where the world number one outlasts his opponent in the trade-off from the baseline. Djoker to serve for the first set!

DJOKOVIC 4-1 FEDERER. Roger can't quite turn up the heat on the Djokovic serve as the Serb suffers a mini lull from 40-0 up. A rasping winner from the Fed is followed by a timid backhand crosscourt into the net from the world number one, but the Serbinator keeps his break advantage via a similar error from the Swiss.

DJOKOVIC 3-1 FEDERER. Just the tonic for Federer who finds his service rhythm with a love hold. It gets a huge cheer from the crowd. He needs to feed off their energy. The Swiss has been thrown off guard by Djokovic's mesmerising opening but is now on the board and will try to work his way back into it from here.

DJOKOVIC 3-0 FEDERER. Novak consolidates with another assured service game. The five-time champion clinches a hold to 15 with another delicious passing shot after Federer looked to have gained the upper hand in the rally with a probing backhand.

BREAK! - DJOKOVIC 2-0 FEDERER. This is quite sublime from the Serb. He's raced out of the traps and made some fine returns to put Fed-Ex under pressure. Roger goes for a couple of big shots, but can't quite make them and it's a rasping attempt down the line that misses the right-hand tramline he is facing that gives Djoker a break at the first time of asking. Not the start the Swiss wanted.

DJOKOVIC 1-0 FEDERER. An outstanding start for Nole. The Serb looks fired up as he rampages to a 40-0 lead with a sizzling backhand down the line to wrong-foot his opponent. A beast of a first serve then proves too hot to handle for Fed-Ex as the world number one records a love hold to open.

Here we go... Federer won the coin toss but opted to receive, so it'll be Djokovic to get us underway.

Djokovic has been solid so far but was forced to go the distance in a four and a half hour epic against Frenchman, Gilles Simon in round four where he got some sound advice from a member of the crowd. Maybe he took the words onboard as the world number one followed the close call with a straight sets success over Kei Nishikori.

OPINION: Tumaini Carayol believes a change of coach could give Federer the edge.

Federer has looked sensational in this tournament so far, once again rolling back the years with a range of magnificent shot-making. The Swiss Maestro has dropped just one set to Grigor Dimitrov as he has breezed into the last four, seeing off the likes of Tomas Berdych, David Goffin and the Bulgarian dubbed 'Baby Fed' along the way.

Back to this one and we are around 15 minutes away from the latest chapter in what has developed into one of tennis' great rivalries. The two players have some record here in Melbourne. Federer has won the title four times, though his last came back in 2010. Djokovic has dominated the tournament this decade, winning four of the last five finals (five titles in total).

HEAD-TO-HEAD: This is the 45th meeting between two tennis greats. It's finely poised at 22-22. The two players met eight times last year with Djokovic triumphing on five occasions. Seven of those showdowns were in finals with the Serb's victories including Wimbledon, US Open and World Tour finals titles.

OVERNIGHT: Johanna Konta's bid to reach the Australian Open women's final was brought to a halt by Angelique Kerber. The number seven seed beat the Brit, 7-5 6-2. However, there was good news for Jamie Murray in the men's doubles. The Scot moved into the final alongside his new partner, Bruno Soares as they saw off Adrian Mannarino and Lucas Pouille 6-3 6-1.
