Hello and welcome to LIVE updates of the 2019 US Open final between Rafael Nadal and Daniil Medvedev. Can Nadal claim his fourth title at Flushing Meadows and take his tally to 19 Grand Slams overall? Or will Russia's rising star produce an upset in his first major final appearance? NADAL 7-5 6-3 5-6 MEDVEDEV. More frustration for Nadal. He looks to come out on top in another gruelling rally but lashes a forehand off target when going for the kill. Medvedev hits a couple of aces and a serve and volley to easily hold to love. He's guaranteed the minimum of a tie break but can go for broke as Nadal serves to stay in the set once again.

NADAL 7-5 6-3 5-5 MEDVEDEV. A trademark crosscourt forehand settles Nadal's nerves and he outlasts Medvedev in a couple of lengthy rallies on his way to a routine love hold.

NADAL 7-5 6-3 4-5 MEDVEDEV. Daniil battles back from 0-30 but then faces break point after coming undone in a sensational 28-shot rally. Again, the Russian digs his heels in to save it with an overhead, but Nadal's powerhouse pass snares another. The world number two has the game on his racket, but somehow contrives to fluff an overhead into the net. Medvedev takes the reprieve and somehow survives the onslaught to hold. He's one game away from taking this to a fourth.

NADAL 7-5 6-3 4-4 MEDVEDEV. Nadal has such a fabulous armoury to choose from. A beautifully crafted point ends with a technically sound volley before a rasping forehand winner to the far corner concludes a lung-bursting rally. Medvedev knows this service game is all-but out of reach and does little to affect the next two points as Nadal holds to love.

NADAL 7-5 6-3 3-4 MEDVEDEV. Suddenly we have a match on here. Medvedev is looking very good out there. So much for all of the talk about tired legs. He produces a sublime drop shot to completely bamboozle Nadal before securing the hold to 15 with a lovely serve and volley routine.

BREAK! - NADAL 7-5 6-3 3-3 MEDVEDEV. Hold the phone! Just as the trophy engraver was being readied, Medvedev comes charging back. A wonderful, low crosscourt backhand pass and a second double fault see him snare two BPs. Nadal saves both and looks to see it out, but inexplicably blazes an overhead wide. The Spaniard looks away ruefully and is clearly affected as he misses on the next point to gift the break right back.

BREAK! - NADAL 7-5 6-3 3-2 MEDVEDEV. Nadal unloads a bullet forehand winner to make 30-30 and senses the moment. Medvedev lashes a tired forehand long to cough up the break point and then dumps another shot into the net as Nadal's supreme defence proves key to making the breakthrough in Set 3.

NADAL 7-5 6-3 2-2 MEDVEDEV. Medvedev plays a sensational point at 30-15 down in a pulsating rally, but still ends up losing it as Nadal delicately executes a volley at the net. A crunching overhead finishes the job and we are all square once again.

NADAL 7-5 6-3 1-2 MEDVEDEV. The No.5 seed seems to have some fire in his serve. He crunches ace number four as he surges to a thumping love hold. He needed more of that much earlier in the contest.

NADAL 7-5 6-3 1-1 MEDVEDEV. Still no joy for the Russian. He plays positive, attacking tennis but can't make enough inroads as a return lands an inch long to allow Nadal to hold to 30.

NADAL 7-5 6-3 0-1 MEDVEDEV. Daniil may not end up smiling too much come the end of this match, but he continues to earn admirers for the way he's fighting for this. He kicks off Set 3 with an impressive hold to 15.

SET! - NADAL 7-5 6-3 MEDVEDEV. Nadal takes a big step towards a 19th major title as he hits back from 15-30 down to serve out Set 2 and move within one of victory against a visibly tiring Medvedev.

NADAL 7-5 5-3 MEDVEDEV. That's a rare quick-fire hold to love for Medvedev. He poses the serve-out question to Nadal, who will move two sets to the good if he can hold now. Medvedev's wife, Daria watches on in hope that her husband can find a second wind to bite back....

NADAL 7-5 5-2 MEDVEDEV. Nadal doing everything he can to demoralise Medvedev. The Spaniard outfoxes the Russian's dropshot with one of his own that hits the net and dribbles over. Nadal motors on from there and consolidates with a game to 15.

BREAK! - NADAL 7-5 4-2 MEDVEDEV. There it is! Nadal gets his break after some frustration with previous break point opportunities. The world number two springs from defence to attack in a wonderfully crafted point to snare a 15-40 lead. Medvedev has done so well to thwart his opponent at times today, but he can't produce clutch serving on this occasion and it's Rafa who takes charge of the set.

NADAL 7-5 3-2 MEDVEDEV. Nadal taking some heat off his first serve to improve his percentages. It's allowing Medvedev to get into the rally more, but on this occasion he can't do enough to threaten. Nadal holds to 15 and edges in front once more.
