NADAL 3-3 MEDVEDEV. That's a much-needed hold for Medvedev who will know Rafa had some decent chances there. The Spaniard blocks a volley at the net long for what would have been 30-30 before rifling a forehand up the line just wide. Nadal still twitchy. Both players keenly aware of how important this first set is.
NADAL 3-2 MEDVEDEV. Rafa looks to be finding his rhythm now. He surges through a highly efficient hold to love to nudge the board in his favour.

BREAK! - NADAL 2-2 MEDVEDEV. Beware the wounded beast. Few players can match Nadal when it comes to breaking back immediately - and he duly raises his level to deny Medvedev the chance to build some early momentum. The Spaniard's timing is still a little off, but he's showing signs of shaking off those cobwebs.
Nice nickname!

BREAK! - NADAL 1-2 MEDVEDEV. Much has been said about Nadal's improved serve at this tournament, but he's having a bit of a sticky start with it today. Medvedev lures a long defensive slice out of the world number two to snare a second break point and this time he gets his reward as Rafa hits another awful forehand into the net. Nervy stuff from the 18-Grand Slam champion.
NADAL 1-1 MEDVEDEV. Interesting to see Daniil using a drop shot early on Rafa. Berrettini had some joy against the No.2 seed in the semi using that tactic, so it could be worth deploying at times. The Russian moves 40-15 up with some solid serving but then avoids deuce when Rafa completely miscues a horrible forehand into the net.
NADAL 1-0 MEDVEDEV. Nadal races 30-0 up with stunning winner down the line from well wide of the net post. It has the crowd purring, but the Spaniard soon shows he's human with a double fault and a pair of crosscourt attempts that land wide. A time violation follows for the No.2 seed, but he remains unfazed as he saves the break point with a beast of a wide serve before digging out the hold from deuce.

Medvedev's brilliant form of late means he will move up to No.4 in the world regardless of the result in this final. Nadal will remain second in the rankings on Monday, but could edge to within 640 points of world number one, Novak Djokovic if he can lift the title today.

Nadal: "When I arrived here, my goal was to produce a chance to compete for the big thing again. Here I am. I have given myself another chance, as I did in Wimbledon, as I did in Australia, as I did in Roland Garros. That's the personal satisfaction. That's the personal happiness."

MEDVEDEV FACTS: The 23-year-old Russian has won 20 of his last 22 matches and broke into the ATP top 10 for the first time in July. His fine form during the North American hard court season saw him reach finals in Montreal and Washington before lifting the Cincinnati title at the expense of David Goffin.
His run to the US Open final means he is only the third man ever to reach all four finals in the same season during the Open era. He is also the first Russian man to get into a major final since Marat Safin in 2005.
