Hello and welcome to LIVE updates of the 2019 US Open final between Rafael Nadal and Daniil Medvedev. Can Nadal claim his fourth title at Flushing Meadows and take his tally to 19 Grand Slams overall? Or will Russia's rising star produce an upset in his first major final appearance? NADAL 7-5 3-2 MEDVEDEV. Nadal taking some heat off his first serve to improve his percentages. It's allowing Medvedev to get into the rally more, but on this occasion he can't do enough to threaten. Nadal holds to 15 and edges in front once more.
NADAL 7-5 2-2 MEDVEDEV. It looks bleak for Medvedev as tired errors leak off his racket to gift Nadal triple break point. The Russian just won't give it up though and mirrors the fighting qualities of his opponent to save all three and then a fourth from deuce. He puffs out his cheeks from the effort, but then clenches his fist in satisfaction at a dogged hold as Nadal hits a loose return long.

NADAL 7-5 2-1 MEDVEDEV. Nadal blows a 30-0 lead to give a heavy-breathing Medvedev some encouragement, but a second ace down the middle T and another big serve keeps the Spaniard in control.

NADAL 7-5 1-1 MEDVEDEV. Daniil gets himself on the board with a solid hold to 15. The 23-year-old Russian is trying different tactics to try and earn some reward. A scorching forehand up the line and brave block volley at the net lay the foundations before Nadal corks a backhand crosscourt attempt just wide.
NADAL 7-5 1-0 MEDVEDEV. That's a bit sloppy from Nadal but Medvedev can't take advantage. A sizzling crosscourt backhand winner gives the Russian a immediate break point, but Nadal pats it away to force deuce. The No.5 seed tries to up the ante but can't manufacture another opportunity as a service winner down the middle T secures the hold for the 18-time Grand Slam champion.

SET! - NADAL 7-5 MEDVEDEV. It's advantage Nadal! The Spaniard raises his level right at the end with some wonderful forehands to tee up two set points. He blows the first opportunity, but this time he isn't denied on the second as he breaks at the death. Nadal takes a hard-fought opener in one hour and two minutes despite some plucky play from the Russian.

NADAL 6-5 MEDVEDEV. The three-time US Open champion sneaks into the net to clinch a hold to 30 with a cute volley. He's guaranteed the minimum of a tie break. Over to Medvedev to try and pocket one more hold to force a breaker he'll fancy his chances in.
NADAL 5-5 MEDVEDEV. What a hold! Daniil coughs up a third double fault of the contest but still looks in control at 40-15. Rafa refuses to give up and battles his way to deuce. Medvedev retorts with some big serving but Nadal just won't go away. The pressure is clearly on the young Russian, but he finds a pair of aces at critical times and eventually prevails from a fourth deuce.
NADAL 5-4 MEDVEDEV. Too good. Nadal makes it three love holds on the spin, concluding with his first ace of the match.

NADAL 4-4 MEDVEDEV. That's clutch tennis and real bravery from Medvedev. He just about wins a face off at the net to fend off the first of two break points. The Russian then executes a super serve and volley combo to make deuce, but can't quite wriggle free. A second double fault of the match gives Nadal a third opportunity but Medvedev stays composed and manages to hold firm and level once more.

NADAL 4-3 MEDVEDEV. Nadal clocks up a second straight love hold to apply some heat as we enter the business end of the opener.

NADAL 3-3 MEDVEDEV. That's a much-needed hold for Medvedev who will know Rafa had some decent chances there. The Spaniard blocks a volley at the net long for what would have been 30-30 before rifling a forehand up the line just wide. Nadal still twitchy. Both players keenly aware of how important this first set is.
