Everton will be satisfied enough with this start, though it remains tricky to envisage them troubling Ederson.

City make space in behind Holgate, who concedes the corner, hit long by Sane. Aguero picks it up on the far side of the box and opens up space by nipping inside in order to curl one. But he imparts fade rather than draw, the ball flying well wide.

City counter through the middle, Aguero dropping and haring at the Everton defence for the 0.132 seconds it takes for Schneiderlin to scythe him down. Little Bobby Madley allows play to go on, nothing comes of it, and he hands out a well-earned yellow card.

Jesus robs Baines on the touchline, but Baines comes back at him well.
